New roofing

After calling a couple of roofing guys who had signs displayed on neighbour's lawns they NEVER showed to give quotes, not exactly inspiring confidence! We called DIRECT ENERGY who showed up promptly and gave a detailed quote. They completed the work on schedule paying a lot of attention to even the small details, such as ensuring that any stray nails that fell into the garden were collected by using a giant rolling magnet! Very happy with the job.

Attic Insullation

They did good work, however the salesman did not tell us that if we first had an energy audit performed under the ecoENERGY Retrofit program we would likely be eligible for a significant rebate / grant from the government. You have to get the energy audit first by a prescribed firm.
Since we did not, we lost out on a lot of money. Either he was not as up to date as he should have been or he was fearful that we would have waited, had the energy audit performed and then gone with someone else....we don't know for sure. All we know is that we lost out on some otherwise easy government grants.

Rental Water Heater Installation with chimney liner

92 minutes on "hold" to report leaking water heater. Heater finally replaced 4 days later. Meantime they were trying to sell me a new furnace. Quote for new furnace from Direct Energy was more than double lowest quote. 3 different service persons quoted 3 different required sizes - 5"/5-1/2" / 6" - for water heater/existing furnace combined chimney liner. Finally - installers of water heater "could not fit" the last quoted 6" size into the chimney and quoting new code requirement "had to" disconnect and cap working furnace, leaving me cold. Rental Water heater chimney liner cost me $450 with Direct Energy - several other places quoted me $300/. Enough said.

Furnace (boiler) installation

Our boiler recently died (shaking the whole house at 3 am), so in went a call to Direct Energy, with whom we have a furnace maintenance agreement. Turns out our 25 year old boiler was toast, necessitating a replacement. Throughout the process, everyone that we dealt with (from service guys, to the service manager, to the sales guy, to the installers) was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. I'm not used to this level of service, especially from large organizations, so I appreciate this opportunity to single out Sandro, Randy, Vito, and Fab for what turned out to be a very positive experience. Wow, this review ended up sounding like an infomercial...

Furnace and Air Conditioning Replacement(High Eff)

I was a bit worried using Direct Energy based on reviews here, however our experience was excellent. Our Sales Rep Mike was very good. He came to see us twice, and worked out the best price he good, based on other quotations we had received. They were more expensive than others, but not by much, and offered no interest equal monthly payments.

They came at the time and on the day they promised. The installation was done painlessly and they kept everything clean. They even installed a better unit than the one initially purchased as Trane had released a newer version!

HOT WATER TANK RENTAL

I called Direct Energy on Sunday night at 10pm as my rental hot water tank was leaking all over the basement (60 gallon tank). I was informed that they answer the phone 24hrs per day, but do not make emergency house calls! The fellow on the phone booked an appt on monday afternoon however to my horror, when the repairman arrived on monday, he simply shut the water shut-off valve (which ended up being broken) and never drained the tank. Then they re-schedule to send another repairman with a new tank. So, I had continuous water flooding my basement until Wednesday afternoon (ie. 4 days to change the tank). I called about 20 timespleading, begging, cajoling, crying, screamingDirect Energy just doesn't care. My furnace sat in 3inches of waterwhen i insisted upon a service call to check my furnace, Direct Energy determined that the CO level was too high and "tagged" the furnaceso now i need to buy a new furnace!! truth be told, all furnaces blow excess CO from a cold startbut i can't be bothered arguing with Direct Energy anymorethey are a huge conglomerate and the public is getting ripped off.

Leaky Water Heater

Had a leaky rental water heater. We phoned at 5pm and they came by 8:30am the next day to check out the leak. The repairman was very helpful and was able to temporarily stop the leak prior to water heater replacement.

Furnace Cleaning turned Torture

I have been purchasing the Furnace insurance from Direct Energy for about $300 a year for at least 3 years, with them only coming ONCE to clean. They will clean once a year, but I just mention this to show how little I have asked of them. They came to clean, and found a crack in the furnace exchanger THE SIZE OF ONE INCH OF ONE HAIR. I have CO detector on each floor. I have a 7 month baby on the 2nd floor. It was 2pm on a day of -20 degrees. By law they had to shut down the furnace! They would not provide me with heaters even for one night while I scrambled to get financing and shopped around for a reasonably priced furnace. The only way they would agree to giving me heaters WHICH THEY HAVE is if I bought their furnace! They offered a replacement at a price that was double what I eventually paid.
I think direct energy was brutally unsympathetic. This is a case of a protection law gone awry as we never experienced headaches etc, yet there was NO concern about leaving an infant in a house on the coldest afternoon without heat. They just pranced out the door on their merry way. Direct energy is a huge company who just doesn't care!
