Front Door - Buyer Beware

One year later had a breakin. The robbers went though the steel door in less than a minute. They were able to get a jimmy tool and bend the side panel support because is it only made of plastic.
Door easily broken into.

To avoid this purchase a lock mechanism with three point locking system.
Make sure the side panel is reinforced with steel so they can't bend the panel.

Approximate cost of services:
$5,000.00

Company Response

Dear Mr. Mumford,

Thank you for your review; here at GEM we take all our customer comments and concerns very seriously. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know everything and hope to continue this dialog moving forward. We are sorry to hear about your recent break in, we are sure that the event has been traumatic for you and your family.

Upon reviewing your concerns we wanted to address and point out to the readers a few facts. The door that you chose was not a solid operating door but a door with an operating sidelight. The mechanics to allow the sidelight to vent must be taken into account. Your door has a police recommended PVC composite frame, not plastic that surpasses in strength from the traditional wood frames, that was drilled into to allow for the functionality of the sidelight vent. This esthetic upgrade caused the door to no longer lock into a solid structure but an integrated lock assembled on the side lite.

We also offer a multipoint lock upgrade to all our customers whom are concerned with security. This lock allows the door to be locked in 3 places providing maximum security, you did not choose to have this hardware added.

After further review of your contract with GEM Windows & Doors there was not mention of a kick panel. We can only be responsible for what is written in our contract and signed by both a GEM representative and the customer.

In conclusion you the buyer chose a quality door for the look and convenience of your home not for the security. We hope that any readers will understand that here at GEM we can advise our customers based on their needs. But ultimately it is the buyer’s choice to opt out of any recommended upgrades.

This is a classic case of a homeowner who is upset with their circumstances and needs to find a person/place thing to blame. Again we are sorry to hear about your break in, we hope this response finds your family in happiness and good health.
