Good workmanship but disappointed by the overbudget

There are two parts to this review. The goods and the bad.

The goods. Jason the painter did a marvelous job laying down the product. Smooth finish, sharp lines, even coating, good prep work. The workmanship is excellent. He even straightened out the screws on the switches when he was putting them back on. Great attention to detail. He left the place clean. Was punctual to the meetings. Polite and professional. Plenty of pictures to keep me in the loop as the job progressed. Even a final walkthrough video before I came in person for the final inspection. In terms of deficiencies to fix they were mostly just minor ceiling hits and a little paint on the door handles. No biggie.

If I judge solely based on workmanship this is a 5 stars job.

However here's the bad that soured the job a little. The job was quoted for $2500. There were some changes before paint touched the wall but Paul from Sales promised despite the changes the final bill should only be a few hundred dollars different. The job went forward and Jason started painting.

Well it turns out 2 coats wasn't enough to provide coverage, it needed 4 coats and primer. So when the dust settled, the $2500 paint job became a $4300 paint job.

I don't mind it costing $4300. If they explained why it costs more from the start I will happily pay it. What I did mind was being promised they can do it at $2500 and then the end being wildly different.

I think Paul and Jason the painter were both caught off guard by how much work is needed to provide coverage for darker colours.

For this I would have deducted 2 stars. However Paul in the end offered to split the difference and we settled for $4000. That showed the price jump wasn't out of malice on their part. It just caught everyone by surprise. So instead I only take 1 star off. 4 stars.

5++ stars for the workmanship.
2 stars for the overbudget.
4 stars overall.

Approximate cost of services:
$3,900.00
