Getting my backyard project started was a really struggle! The project—I thought—wasn’t too complex, but required craftmanship in a few areas. It involved removing an old wooden deck, installing a new cedar deck with a pergola purchased from Costco, installing interlock with a decorative frame and in-brick lights, installing a small decorative wall with lights, installing a fountain with three heavy basalt columns an in-ground water basin, removing a tree, waterproofing a section of the foundation and building a walkway with stepping stones. The journey started with a lengthy process to select a contractor, which proved to be very stressful. While I met a few wonderful people, most of the contractors were either not interested because of various reasons (eg, the project was too small or too complex, my requirements were too specific, etc.), approach the opportunity with a “take it or leave” attitude or provided off-the-charts quotes. The bad experience culminated with the selected contractor changing his mind at the last minute, which pushed out the project from spring to fall. This is when I decided to sign the contract with Yevgeniy (John) from Action Home Services. From the very beginning he was very respectful, very patient while addressing my questions and providing clarifications, and very knowledgeable. He understood my goals, provided numerous suggestions to ensure the project is delivered on budget and gave a reasonable quote while still clarifying the uncertainties. His crew, a mix of young and energetic people and very seasoned craftsman, started on time in late October and worked very hard daily, from early morning to late in the evening, sometimes under harsh conditions (heavy rain and low temperature). They completed the work in three weeks, with a week break caused by the late delivery of the wall bricks. As I am a professional in project management and—I have to say—I have very high expectations and I am also very detailed oriented. At first I was really concerned that I may not get the expected quality. However, Nick did a wonderful job with the deck and pergola. The quality of the carpentry he delivered is typically associated with in-house work. As with any project of this nature, it is difficult to anticipate all the challenges. Consequently, we also had a few changes from the original project. Yevgeniy was very flexible and, again, reasonable when discussing the impact and the additional costs (aside from absorbing a few changes at no cost). Throughout the project he continuously ensured me that I will be satisfied once the project is complete. And he was right. I was very happy with the outcome and I cannot wait for the spring to really enjoy my new backyard! I highly recommend them for any project of this nature.
