Successful Radon Mitigation

After detailed research on Radon and options for Radon Mitigation, I chose RadonWest based on their excellent reputation and position as a leader in the industry. Renata did an exceptional job evaluating and estimating the job and Colin was outstanding with the mitigation itself. Both were very generous sharing their time and a wealth of knowledge based on many years of experience.

The mitigation was completely successful, bringing radon levels down from 200-450 to between 10-20 Bq/m3.

I give my full recommendation to RadonWest for their excellent knowledge, professionalism and the first rate results they deliver.

Absolutely Amazing!

Renata and Colin were both amazing to work with. They are super knowledgeable about radon and quick to respond to emails. I felt like I was in a radon crash course when Renata came to do the walk through and then again when Colin was here to perform the mitigation! Our radon levels went from as high as the mid 200s to as low as 10! It's remained in the 10-30 range since the mitigation was done 3 months ago. I'm really glad I went with Radon West, they are worth every penny. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who is looking to have their radon mitigation done right.

Radon Mitigation

We were scheduled for the work just days after the pandemic lockdown in March so we agreed to hold off until things calmed down. Colin and Jeff came on Wednesday the 20th of May at the time they said they would. They were professional and efficient and very tidy with their work. Colin made sure we understood whatever we wanted to understand about the project and post care. I would recommend Radon West to anyone looking for a professional team to complete the project in a timely manner.

Successful Mitigation

We had a radon test done and our numbers came around 300. We contacted Radon West, Renata came by and did the pre-mitigation process and explained all the details and discussed our options for mitigation.

Colin and his team came for the mitigation process, gave the numbers prior to mitigation and thoroughly explained what steps are going to be done. Completed the whole mitigation process on time as promised and our radon numbers are down to 10 now. Really happy with the mitigation done by Radon West, would highly recommend this company.

Home Radon mitigation

We volunteered for a radon study and the results indicated that we should consider radon mitigation. We contacted Radon West - they did a thorough evaluation and provided a quote. The work was completed on time and as per the quote. We confirmed with our own digital detector that the mitigation was successful. Radon West was professional, knowledgeable and courteous. I highly recommend them.

great work, technical and thorough

Colin and his team were very technical and thorough. They looked at different options and took a lot of measurements. A couple months wait time but they did a very good job. Lots of good explanations and no condescending as you get with some trades. No hesitation to recommend them.

I understand Radon West teaches the course to get certified as a radon remediator, that says a lot.

Radon Mitigation

When I saw the following typo (or auto-correction) in Renata's email: ...
>Let me know if you anything Seuss with the attachments.
>Best,
>Renata

I knew I could only respond one way: ...
>I don’t like Radon in my house
>It must stay out just like a mouse
>So we will fix that really quick
>To pay your quote is what we pick

Not to be outdone, they replied: ....
>We’d like to thank you for choice
>With low radon, you will rejoice
>We presume you will want the best,
>We’ll prove to you that’s Radon West!

That was the best acceptance of our proposed quote we received yet. Made the whole team laugh so had to respond with the same charm. Thanks for making our day and posting it here today. My niece will be happy to see her poem in print. Hopefully it also makes someone reading laugh as well. :) Thank you.

Radon Mitigation

Saw the University of Calgary radon testing project a few years ago. Being British, and knowing that radon can be an issue with homes, ordered the puck with the thought that it would come back close to zero and no problem. It didn't. Came back around 220-ish. Decided that I needed to know more and bought a radon detector. Results were worse. 250 to 450 over various parts of the house. Got in touch with RadonWest and they sent out someone to have a look. They gave us options. Confirmed that the meter I had chosen was a good one (Corentium from AirThings) and we arranged for them to come in and do some mitigation work. The team were here a day. Very impressed with the work and the expertise. They explained what they were doing and why at every stage. Now we are waiting to see if this has done the trick. We know that we have a challenging house (2 sumps and a well inside the house) and the work done today might need a second kick, but fingers crossed. However, I do know that with RadonWest we will get rid of the radon, or at least to very acceptable levels, eventually.

Hi David,
Thanks so much for the great review. We really appreciate it. With depressurizing just one of your footprints as a phased approach it will be super interesting to see your new levels after the installation this week. Thanks for taking the time to leave your radon experience with our team. Renata

Successful and professional install resulting in reduction to safe radon levels

With the most experience and professionalism of any Calgary area radon mitigation, the very informative and thorough premigitation review (by Renata) and then preanalysis and install and testing of the active sub-slab depressurization system (performed by Grant and colleague) is highly recommended for anyone concerned about high radon levels in their home or building. The install of a very quiet fan system has resulted on a drop from yearly average of around 195 (Bq/m3 as measured on Airthings Wave) to month average of 18 since install with closed house and some very cold days. 200 being the health Canada recommended level for immediate mitigation.
So very happy to have safe levels finally, but after 15 years exposure to these high levels we wish we had known about the risk and had Radon West install a system a lot earlier. At least now we have peace of mind that we are no longer breathing in this radioactive gas that is considered the primary cause of nonsmoking lung cancer.
Please test for Radon levels and get a migitation system if you have high levels. Radon West is the most knowledgeable and experienced company!

More about Radon West

Radon West Ltd. is one of Canada’s most engaged companies in the radon industry.
We are a C-NRPP certified, full service radon and building science company, for both commercial and residential projects.
We also mitigate radon levels in existing buildings, install new construction details, and provide radon related certification and continuing education training.
Our services also include testing, design, analysis, inspections, research and development as well as consultation.
We develop and maintain NORM management programs to meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Our technical expertise in the understanding of building science and system design ensures that the final installation is the best fit for the many factors that influence radon infiltration such as construction type, climate, geology, and the operating systems of a building.
We specialize in technical diagnostics and challenging projects.

We are a recognized industry leader in the radon services industry and are known nationally for our high-quality work and for our science-based design of effective and efficient radon control systems specific to Canada’s cold climate.

Our history:
Two of our founders built their own home in 2006. They had heard about radon but were assured by almost everyone they talked to that it was not a problem in Alberta. A couple of years later they decided to test anyway and were surprised with the findings. They had radon in their home above the acceptable levels. They reduced their levels and then started to test the homes of family and friends. 42% of them had levels higher than the acceptable guidelines. One founder’s levels were so high that based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines her family should have evacuated their home within 3 months. They had been living in the home for 8 years with their young children. Hence, in 2012 Radon West Ltd. was born in 2012. Now our team of 7 operates out of a head office in Okotoks, Alberta as well as field locations in Cochrane and Calgary.

Areas of expertise:
Our understanding of the science behind radon entry and mitigation has created our reputation as a “different kind” of radon professional. Our company is science driven and with that comes curiosity and exploring different ways to do things. We are well equipped to more than just the standard radon testing and mitigation that is common in the industry.

Mitigation:
The majority of radon reduction systems in Canada are depressurization systems for which we have a defined process that ensures we are designing systems specific to the building. It begins with a site assessment to help define scope and develop budget for mitigation activities. Next, we perform detailed diagnostics to determine natural pressure, design pressure and minimum target pressure for effective radon protection. Then we develop soil resistance and pipe resistance measurements to allow for an accurate estimate of the depressurization fan characteristics required for the design. Next, we apply temperature correction factors to ensure systems will work in the coldest time of the year. Construction of the sub-slab mitigation system according to design and budget is completed and documented in a detailed as-built application relating to the project. The system is commissioned and a short-term test is performed to verify system effectiveness. Some systems require different mitigation techniques, such as HVAC changes, but each building is different and the best mitigation type can only be determined once testing and diagnostics have been completed.

Radon in air testing:
We have experience managing large-scale testing projects. In the last 2 years we have managed test distribution, quality assurance and quality control activities for more than 10,000 buildings. We follow stringent quality control/assurance protocols.

We also offer residential test kits for home owners. Our kits are different than most others because we complete the same stringent quality control and assurance testing so homeowners have the same quality when testing their home themselves.

Radon in water testing:
If there are areas where the UofC processes significant quantities of groundwater, Radon West has experience quantifying the contribution of processing groundwater on the radon level.

Radon emanation from building materials (flux) testing:
In the unlikely event that radon emanation is thought to be a significant factor; we have the ability to quantify the impact of radon emanation inhouse.

Gamma radiation testing:
Certain types of radon mitigation systems can create gamma radiation issues. We have the equipment and knowledge to measure and analyze gamma radiation.

Building Code:
Radon is our business and we recognize how and which parts of the building code are directly related to radon. We can evaluate and understand how different technologies and products can improve or impede the ultimate goal of radon reduction.

Building Envelope Testing:
Radon entry and mitigation is all about building science. We need to understand how the building is operating before we can remediate efficiently and effectively. We use blower doors, duct blasters, thermal imaging cameras and smoke machines, etc. We consider these building science skills invaluable however few people in the industry have them.

Research and Development:
As with any science-based company we know that increased information drives better technologies, processes and policy. We collaborate with other specialized scientists, like sound engineers for example, to help improve and develop new techniques for both radon testing and mitigation to make systems less intrusive, more energy efficient and effective.

Training:
We are one of only four C-NRPP approved trainers in Canada and the only one in Western Canada that provides certification and continuing education courses in the field of radon measurement and mitigation.
