Radon Mitigation system

Professionalism, Experienced, Educational, Dedicated to their work are how I would describe Radon West. From the first visit by Renata to assess what I had already done to mitigate the Radon in our home, to the follow-up visit by Colin and Renata to install the mitigation system they exhibited these four traits consistently. Plus they were fun to work with and showed me places in my walls where I could replace the insulation with spray foam to better insulate from outside air coming in. I had been thinking of doing a DIY job to save money but after seeing how they approached the problem and the expertise they bring, it simply is not worth it. I did not know anything about the code regarding where one can vent a Radon mitigation system nor would I have been able to design a system so compact as they did to get the maximum efficiency out of such a quiet small fan. Colin was very enthusiastic in explaining the science behind what he was doing and how he was working out the pressure gradient in our basement in order to meet the design specs for the pressure they wanted to achieve for effective Radon venting to the outside. And the final job is so clean and compact that future basement renos would not be impacted.

Successful Radon Mitigation

We bought Airthings measurement and tested our basement as high. Renata came and gave us a detailed explanation on everything about radon gas. Unlike other company who just want your business and tell you with a method that are most convenient and cost effective for them, Renata is trying to education you.

Colin came on the installation day. When he learned our home (built in 2010, building code not required to have radon system) has a passive system where a pipe connect under slab to whirlybird vent in the roof, he suspect it is no for radon. Since there is a landfill near our community, he suspected it designed for methane. He went extra miles to rent a methane detector on his own cost to make sure our home is methane safe, before installing the radon system.

Also, Colin welcomes the idea of having suction point closer to the center of the house. It means more work and material involved. Colin also capped the passive system for us as well. Applaud Colin's professionalism and dedication for the best result, he has no problem with the approach.

If you want a true professional to make your home safe, this is the only company I would recommend. Thank you Colin, Chris and Renata. After couple days of installation, the radon reading dropped to 20s. This really gives us peace of mind living in our home.

Radon mitigation successful

Radon West was recommended by a friend, and I am glad I decided to go with them. Colin and Renata truly are professionals. I appreciate Colin's willingness to thoroughly explain the testing and design process. They checked for possible leak points and sealed them. Colin and Renata also made sure that the pipes and fan were installed neatly and the job site was cleaned up afterwards. Based on my digital tester, my radon average dropped from 250+ Bq/m3 to 20+ Bq/m3. Thank you Colin and Renata!

Radon Gas Remediation

After a visit to our home, Colin from RadonWest gave us a very thorough explanation as to why our radon readings were so high and what he proposed to do to remediate. After agreeing to go ahead, when his workload allowed, Colin proceeded with the work. After installation, our Radon reading dropped from 460 units, (+260 units above recommended max) to about 40 units!! Though it took some time for our tech to finally complete the install, overall project was very professionally done with detailed explanations all the way!! Pictures are of the radon pump (suction) from below the basement concrete slab, and piping to vent the radon gas to the outside of the house!!!

Impeccable Service & Quality

Radon West installed a crawl space vapor barrier and radon remediation system for us. Working with their entire team was such a refreshing experience. At every stage, from estimate to completion, they were the consummate professionals and always made time to answer our questions enthusiastically and in detail. They made sure we understood all aspects of the work and the impact of each step. It was a pleasure working with people who so clearly enjoy and excel at what they do! Bonus that mess and disruption were kept to a minimum and there were no surprise charges. This is the only company that I would recommend to my friends and family for radon remediation.

Radon Remediation

The RadonWest crew came highly recommended to myself by colleagues, and installed a mitigation system at our house. I was thoroughly impressed by their extensive expertise in the field, and Colin's willingness to educate the homeowner as they made progress. In particular, their attention to the smallest of details on the job gave me great comfort in that the "big details" of the remediation work itself was being covered. Very happy I went with RadonWest vs the other places that quoted.

Radon Mitigation

This review is four months after the installation of an active depressurization system, and it's still working just great. Radon levels are around 13 Bq/m3 on average, and sometimes down to 3, and fell to this level within 36 hours of installation.

Colin was amazing on the day of, taking the time to answer my many questions and explain the science of how it all worked. He even took the time to demonstrate how little air pressure is involved in bringing radon into your house.

The work was quickly and cleanly done, and the place was spotless after, even having to drill an exit pipe through the house concrete in heavy snow. I don't want to get high radon ever again, but I do hope to work with Radon West in the future.

Radon Abatement and a Friendly Chat

Colin and Don did a great job on the installation and thoroughly explained the science behind the system. Both were very friendly and they charged exactly the quote - which was from 4 years ago! They even helped clean up and patch a couple things that a previous HVAC contractor had left behind.

More about Radon West

Radon West Ltd. is one of Canada’s most engaged companies in the radon industry.
We are a C-NRPP certified, full service radon and building science company, for both commercial and residential projects.
We also mitigate radon levels in existing buildings, install new construction details, and provide radon related certification and continuing education training.
Our services also include testing, design, analysis, inspections, research and development as well as consultation.
We develop and maintain NORM management programs to meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Our technical expertise in the understanding of building science and system design ensures that the final installation is the best fit for the many factors that influence radon infiltration such as construction type, climate, geology, and the operating systems of a building.
We specialize in technical diagnostics and challenging projects.

We are a recognized industry leader in the radon services industry and are known nationally for our high-quality work and for our science-based design of effective and efficient radon control systems specific to Canada’s cold climate.

Our history:
Two of our founders built their own home in 2006. They had heard about radon but were assured by almost everyone they talked to that it was not a problem in Alberta. A couple of years later they decided to test anyway and were surprised with the findings. They had radon in their home above the acceptable levels. They reduced their levels and then started to test the homes of family and friends. 42% of them had levels higher than the acceptable guidelines. One founder’s levels were so high that based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines her family should have evacuated their home within 3 months. They had been living in the home for 8 years with their young children. Hence, in 2012 Radon West Ltd. was born in 2012. Now our team of 7 operates out of a head office in Okotoks, Alberta as well as field locations in Cochrane and Calgary.

Areas of expertise:
Our understanding of the science behind radon entry and mitigation has created our reputation as a “different kind” of radon professional. Our company is science driven and with that comes curiosity and exploring different ways to do things. We are well equipped to more than just the standard radon testing and mitigation that is common in the industry.

Mitigation:
The majority of radon reduction systems in Canada are depressurization systems for which we have a defined process that ensures we are designing systems specific to the building. It begins with a site assessment to help define scope and develop budget for mitigation activities. Next, we perform detailed diagnostics to determine natural pressure, design pressure and minimum target pressure for effective radon protection. Then we develop soil resistance and pipe resistance measurements to allow for an accurate estimate of the depressurization fan characteristics required for the design. Next, we apply temperature correction factors to ensure systems will work in the coldest time of the year. Construction of the sub-slab mitigation system according to design and budget is completed and documented in a detailed as-built application relating to the project. The system is commissioned and a short-term test is performed to verify system effectiveness. Some systems require different mitigation techniques, such as HVAC changes, but each building is different and the best mitigation type can only be determined once testing and diagnostics have been completed.

Radon in air testing:
We have experience managing large-scale testing projects. In the last 2 years we have managed test distribution, quality assurance and quality control activities for more than 10,000 buildings. We follow stringent quality control/assurance protocols.

We also offer residential test kits for home owners. Our kits are different than most others because we complete the same stringent quality control and assurance testing so homeowners have the same quality when testing their home themselves.

Radon in water testing:
If there are areas where the UofC processes significant quantities of groundwater, Radon West has experience quantifying the contribution of processing groundwater on the radon level.

Radon emanation from building materials (flux) testing:
In the unlikely event that radon emanation is thought to be a significant factor; we have the ability to quantify the impact of radon emanation inhouse.

Gamma radiation testing:
Certain types of radon mitigation systems can create gamma radiation issues. We have the equipment and knowledge to measure and analyze gamma radiation.

Building Code:
Radon is our business and we recognize how and which parts of the building code are directly related to radon. We can evaluate and understand how different technologies and products can improve or impede the ultimate goal of radon reduction.

Building Envelope Testing:
Radon entry and mitigation is all about building science. We need to understand how the building is operating before we can remediate efficiently and effectively. We use blower doors, duct blasters, thermal imaging cameras and smoke machines, etc. We consider these building science skills invaluable however few people in the industry have them.

Research and Development:
As with any science-based company we know that increased information drives better technologies, processes and policy. We collaborate with other specialized scientists, like sound engineers for example, to help improve and develop new techniques for both radon testing and mitigation to make systems less intrusive, more energy efficient and effective.

Training:
We are one of only four C-NRPP approved trainers in Canada and the only one in Western Canada that provides certification and continuing education courses in the field of radon measurement and mitigation.
