Radon remediation

We were very impressed with the level of knowledge, professionalism and work ethic of the team at Radon West. During the quote they took time to assess our house, explained the science behind radon and mitigation, and discussed what options were available to us. We felt confident going ahead with their services. The technicians were thorough, explained each step of what they were doing and cleaned up well after they were done. We're very pleased with how everything was installed and feel much safer living and breathing in our home.

radon mitigation

Our radon test revealed very high levels. I requested estimates from 3 companies. Of these, Renatta from RadonWest was the most knowledgeable and the most clear and patient in her explanations. Costs for all 3 were similar so I opted to go with RadonWest. Preparation and installation by Grant and his partner surpassed all my expectations. They took time to carefully explain what needed to be done and how they'd go about it. They kept me posted during the install and ensured I understood the how and why. I was very impressed with their attitudes and their professionalism. I would highly recommend this company to anyone seeking a similar service.

Great service

The crew at Radon West did a fantastic job. Great communication throughout the process. Job was completed as per the original estimate. Installers went above and beyond to ensure the job was done right even though it took half a day longer than expected with a complicated sub slab and crawl space system.

radon remediation superstars

We brought in RadonWest to fix a radon remediation install from a well know basement install business in Calgary. Our radon levels were extremely high, 10 times acceptable limits. After 8 months of struggle, in one day RadonWest identified the complexity through extensive testing, and then installed an appropriate remediation system (completely negating the previous install from other company). If you have radon, these are the folks to call. Do not bother with anyone else.

We can breathe easy again thanks to Radon West

Overall, an amazing experience. We initially hired another company to install a radon fan in our new house. However, we were not seeing the results we had hoped for so (inital levels of over 1500 Bq/m3, after install radon levels were still averaging 150 Bq/m3). So we called Radon West. They helped identify the issue with the inital installation and developed a plan to fix it at minimal cost utilizing the system that was already in place. Radon West understood my urgency and came after hours to rectify the issue. Our levels are now down to 15 Bq/m3 or less! Thank you Radon West for all the calls and emails and prioritizing us to resolve our radon issue in a timely and cost efficient manner.

Radon Mitigation

When I read all the reviews of Radon West I said to myself, these reviews are too good to be true. But they are not. I was truly impressed by the level of professionalism, knowledge and quality of work. Working with this company was a great experience. . I bought a Radon Eye and was shocked at the variability of the Radon Levels over a period of 2 months. We had peak levels over 600 Bq/m3. Our average reading was around 180. After our mitigation we are averaging 21 and our peak after one month is 37. I could not be happier. I would recommend this company to anyone that wanted to make sure their house had minimal radon levels. Matt Pavlik

I told my co-worker if he hired someone other than Radon West I'd have to give his head a shake!

After Radon West installed a sub-slab mitigation system in my basement I was so pleased with their work, level of knowledge, professionalism, quick response to any and all questions, passion for the work they do, willingness to provide various options that would meet any budget, that I told my co-workerwhose radon test came back high that if he hired anyone else I’d have to give his head a shake!

What set Radon West apart from the other contractors I interviewed:

1. Radon West was the only contractor I intereviewed that said they install 20W fans. This is what makes the money spent on the communications diagnostics worth it! The other contractors included the diangostics, but will still install 50W fans even though when the diangostics will show 20W is effective. The fan runs 24/7/365 days a year. The more power the more noise and more cost they are to run.
2. Radon West offers a DIY kit and I have no doubt they would answer any and all questtions, provide suport as needed. Their goal is to improve the lives of their clients, so they work with you to meet your needs at a budget you can manage.
3. Offer diagnostics only, for those who want to purchase a fan through a third party.
4. Offer installation only – although diagnostics are recommended, I do believe they will install even if you opt out.
5. Radon West was the only one that suggested a different pipe route to ensure safe setback from our dryer vent. They follow best practices, and follows the same code as for HVAC.
6. I believe they were the only contractor that included a muffler for the pipe.

Our experience couldn't have been better. How often can you say that when you are spending money on something you don't WANT to spend money on! Outcome: We have a quiet fan. Radon is below 20 bq/m3 (was 400+ bq/m3).

They are super busy, large contracts with CBE, UofC, Gov’t Canada, but they still found time to do a site visit at 7:30 pm on a Friday night and complete the install 2 weeks later. When Colin was over with his father-in-law completing the installation he saw that my husband was struggling with a different home project. He helped my husband, offered the use of his high tech/gadget tools (including a thermo-imaging camera which indicated a major problem in our attic that we since had fixed)! Thank you Renata, Colin and Michelle for your outstanding work and reminding me that some contractors can still be trusted!

Meticulous and Thorough

Colin (owner) and Ken spent the better part of 10 hours to install a Radon mitigation system in the basement of our home. Colin explained the science behind the solution and isn't satisfied with a 'good enough' approach. He has an outstanding attention to detail and looks to ensure that the best possible outcome is achieved, given the conditions that are presented. I would not hesitate to recommend Radon West to others.

More about Radon West

Radon West Ltd. is one of Canada’s most engaged companies in the radon industry.
We are a C-NRPP certified, full service radon and building science company, for both commercial and residential projects.
We also mitigate radon levels in existing buildings, install new construction details, and provide radon related certification and continuing education training.
Our services also include testing, design, analysis, inspections, research and development as well as consultation.
We develop and maintain NORM management programs to meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Our technical expertise in the understanding of building science and system design ensures that the final installation is the best fit for the many factors that influence radon infiltration such as construction type, climate, geology, and the operating systems of a building.
We specialize in technical diagnostics and challenging projects.

We are a recognized industry leader in the radon services industry and are known nationally for our high-quality work and for our science-based design of effective and efficient radon control systems specific to Canada’s cold climate.

Our history:
Two of our founders built their own home in 2006. They had heard about radon but were assured by almost everyone they talked to that it was not a problem in Alberta. A couple of years later they decided to test anyway and were surprised with the findings. They had radon in their home above the acceptable levels. They reduced their levels and then started to test the homes of family and friends. 42% of them had levels higher than the acceptable guidelines. One founder’s levels were so high that based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines her family should have evacuated their home within 3 months. They had been living in the home for 8 years with their young children. Hence, in 2012 Radon West Ltd. was born in 2012. Now our team of 7 operates out of a head office in Okotoks, Alberta as well as field locations in Cochrane and Calgary.

Areas of expertise:
Our understanding of the science behind radon entry and mitigation has created our reputation as a “different kind” of radon professional. Our company is science driven and with that comes curiosity and exploring different ways to do things. We are well equipped to more than just the standard radon testing and mitigation that is common in the industry.

Mitigation:
The majority of radon reduction systems in Canada are depressurization systems for which we have a defined process that ensures we are designing systems specific to the building. It begins with a site assessment to help define scope and develop budget for mitigation activities. Next, we perform detailed diagnostics to determine natural pressure, design pressure and minimum target pressure for effective radon protection. Then we develop soil resistance and pipe resistance measurements to allow for an accurate estimate of the depressurization fan characteristics required for the design. Next, we apply temperature correction factors to ensure systems will work in the coldest time of the year. Construction of the sub-slab mitigation system according to design and budget is completed and documented in a detailed as-built application relating to the project. The system is commissioned and a short-term test is performed to verify system effectiveness. Some systems require different mitigation techniques, such as HVAC changes, but each building is different and the best mitigation type can only be determined once testing and diagnostics have been completed.

Radon in air testing:
We have experience managing large-scale testing projects. In the last 2 years we have managed test distribution, quality assurance and quality control activities for more than 10,000 buildings. We follow stringent quality control/assurance protocols.

We also offer residential test kits for home owners. Our kits are different than most others because we complete the same stringent quality control and assurance testing so homeowners have the same quality when testing their home themselves.

Radon in water testing:
If there are areas where the UofC processes significant quantities of groundwater, Radon West has experience quantifying the contribution of processing groundwater on the radon level.

Radon emanation from building materials (flux) testing:
In the unlikely event that radon emanation is thought to be a significant factor; we have the ability to quantify the impact of radon emanation inhouse.

Gamma radiation testing:
Certain types of radon mitigation systems can create gamma radiation issues. We have the equipment and knowledge to measure and analyze gamma radiation.

Building Code:
Radon is our business and we recognize how and which parts of the building code are directly related to radon. We can evaluate and understand how different technologies and products can improve or impede the ultimate goal of radon reduction.

Building Envelope Testing:
Radon entry and mitigation is all about building science. We need to understand how the building is operating before we can remediate efficiently and effectively. We use blower doors, duct blasters, thermal imaging cameras and smoke machines, etc. We consider these building science skills invaluable however few people in the industry have them.

Research and Development:
As with any science-based company we know that increased information drives better technologies, processes and policy. We collaborate with other specialized scientists, like sound engineers for example, to help improve and develop new techniques for both radon testing and mitigation to make systems less intrusive, more energy efficient and effective.

Training:
We are one of only four C-NRPP approved trainers in Canada and the only one in Western Canada that provides certification and continuing education courses in the field of radon measurement and mitigation.
