furnace maintenance

John was knowledgeable in his work.
He arrived in the time slot scheduled, was neat, tidy and worked efficiently.
.He pointed out things I was not aware of i.e filter in furnace was not quite the right size.
He checked thermostat and advised that the battery needed to be changed, showed me how and then did it.
He checked the ducts and recommended air duct cleaning. We set up an appointment for later in the month.

Furnace Cleaning

I previously had a weekend service call and the Mersey technician was professional, knowledgeable and fixed the problem quickly. Today I had a furnace cleaning. The technician Cory Latino did a very thorough job and explained everything he did to me. I won't hesitate to use Mersey Service Experts again. They show up when they say they will and get the job done.

Furnace cleaning gone wrong

Horrible experience! My advice is to avoid these people.
Here's my story. It's moderately long, but I wanted to be clear.

Mersey had been doing the annual maintenance on our furnace for the last 8 years or so and every year in the past they indicated that our furnace was too big for the house and that it was cycling off more than it should and they left it at that.
This year, cleaning was done as usual, but then the cleaning guy had his supervisor come over to check things out. His supervisor came over and indicated that we have a problem with the furnace cycling off - something that we have known for years. He had us open all of the vents and remove the air filter and he then noted that the furnace was no longer cycling off. End of issue? No.

He then told me that I need to get a new furnace and that he could send someone the next day to make arrangements. When I asked him if there were any other options, he indicated that there were none. (Now remember, he had already resolved the issue by opening all of the vents and removing the filter.)
I told him that I would discuss the situation with my wife and get back to them. At this point, he indicated that he had to "red tag" the furnace. For those of you who don't know, an HVAC technician can attach such a warning tag, or "red tag", to your furnace, forcing you to correct an issue or have your gas disconnected by Enbridge. So he attached a red tag to our furnace and he gave us 14 days to correct the "issue". Now, the Enbridge rules state that you must clear the issue 5 business days before the indicated number of days on the tag - so now, we're down from 14 days to 7 days to clear the issue, because we have to include a weekend.

The supervisor told me that he was obligated to "red tag" me for safety reasons and to avoid liability, but is this a valid reason given that it had been an on-going situation for years and that he resolved the issue before he issued the tag? I don't think so. And even if you accept their reasoning, I believe it was unfair of them to provide us with such a short time period to act.

So... I had 7 days to correct the issue, or Enbridge would disconnect my gas:
Mersey had indicated that the only way to fix the problem was to have them install a new furnace but I found someone to update our duct work and solve the so-called "problem" at far less expense than a new furnace.

Mersey put us though a lot of anxiety and trouble. We wasted a lot of time resolving this issue. I feel that their treatment of us was very unfair. Were they trying to goad us into spending more money than necessary or were they simply incompetent in not recognizing alternative solutions? Either way, I would avoid these people based on my experience.

Duct cleaning

I suppose the duct work is cleaned. Instead of vacuuming up the dirt, it was blown out of the vents and I ended up having to vacuum the dirt from the floor. I am certaian there must have been more dirt than I vacuumed but I do know that he was blowing the dirt up out of the vents.

Failed Service

Middle of January 2017 our furnace stopped working (igniter failed). It was a weekend, and my family was home all day. Called Mersey and ordered repairs. House was cold and uncomfortable as we proceeded to wait 9 hours for even an acknowledgement that someone was going to be able to come and look at our furnace. Called Mersey back several times while we waited, but they could give me no assurance that someone would indeed make it out that day. So at 9pm I cancelled our order. Before going to bed that night (very cold now), I recalled that the Mersey Web site offered a "schedule online" option. So, using that method, I quickly ordered service for the next morning (Sunday) and then hit the hay. Woke up early Sunday morning to find that I had yet to receive confirmation that my online request had been processed. I called Mersey again, and was told that there online scheduling service does not work, nor has it been working for some time. Frustrated, over the phone I rescheduled service for that morning (Sunday). Fortunately (I was told), I had called early so it looked like we were going to be the first job of the day for the repairman they had on call. After an hour of waiting, Mersey called back to tell me that they had made a mistake: they had previously quoted me a service call charge of $99, but they had now realized that it was in fact Sunday, so the charge would be about $40 more. Fair enough, but they had made an even graver mistake: it was in fact a *different* repairman that was on call, and this one actually had five calls already slated for the day. They again could not tell me when they would get around to servicing us, but they did warn us that several of the other calls were for "priority customers"; we were at the bottom of the list. I was given the impression it would be many hours, perhaps another full day, before our furnace could be tended to by Mersey. Disappointed once again, I cancelled the order and decided to try another business. There was one positive note in the whole experience: Mersey's dispatchers were quite polite on the phone.
