Reconnecting plumbing after a new vanity installed

Here is what happened to us. We had a vanity replaced in our en-suite bathroom and needed a plumber to reconnect 2 new sinks and 2 faucets to the existing pipes. We called Safari Plumbing. They told us they can do the job, but they warned us that they would have to charge us $79 dollars for the visit to make the work estimate. We agreed. Their plumber, Bruce comes in. Without asking too many questions or explaining too much he writes down his findings and presents us with a cost estimate of $1370 + HST. When in disbelief we ask him why the cost is so shockingly high. He says that the existing pipes are incorrectly installed and we would need the walls to be cut out and the pipes to be re-worked, and then we would need to bring in someone else to fix the walls (for extra cost) later. Please note, the original plumbing was professionally done by Minto up to the code and passed all the inspections 10 years ago.

Anyway, of course we would not agree to this madness. We had to invite another plumber who agreed to do the job for $200 including taxes. There was a tiny challenge in this job, completely unrelated to what the Safari plumber was imagining. Otherwise, this job would probably cost even less.

Please save yourself any frustration and find anybody but Safari Plumbing to do the job.

Approximate cost of services:
$200.00

Company Response

Bruce, the plumber we sent to your home, has over 30 years of experience and is licensed and certified by the Province of Ontario. He did a thorough evaluation of the old vs. new drain work and surmised that to have the new drains installed correctly, some changes would have to be made at the connections in the wall. Bruce and I both feel that it is very important that the drains in your home be installed correctly and properly to prevent sewer and methane gases from entering your home. Children in the home with breathing difficulties could be disastrously affected by coming into contact with these gases. If you find yourself noticing a bad odour in your home, please call us or the services of another licensed plumbing company to investigate. Leaving the problem could make you or your family very sick. Should you notice any bad odours and wish for us to return and redo the work correctly, we would be happy to do so for the original quoted price.
