Refinish bedroom/hallway floors and stairs

I initially asked for two detailed quotes: one for the bedroom floor and a second for the stairs and hallway. I received one general quote stating work to be done and total cost. No detailed breakdown; no two quotes. I questioned the initial employee as to whether they use a drum sander on the floors and was told "Yes". Nope. Sub-contractor used a hand-held, three sandpaper-held disks sander which ruined my floors. I initially inquired as to whether the sub-contractor used the newer water dust-filtration unit and was told that he uses a bag (which let a lot of dust escape into my house). Rather than removing the bannister spindles and using a drum sander, the sub-contractor took the easy way out deciding to scrape the stairs and between the spindles. Now I see gouge marks on the floors/stairs rather than smooth sanding marks. Before work started, I created an "Addendum to Contract" which outlined in more detail as to how the work was to be performed; QEW chose to ignore it. After three attempts on my part, QEW sent out a new employee who wouldn't sign the Addendum as "He didn't feel comfortable" doing so. He said he had to discuss the details with his boss. Didn't hear back from him until the sub-contractor arrived, but the employee wouldn't sign the Addendum. I really wanted to ask the sub-contractor after he was finished if he'd be happy with the work he did if it was his house, but didn't as he worked very hard at the job. The end result of the work that was done was that it definitely wasn't what I wanted and requested; the deposit that they requested was in the vicinity of 30% rather than the typical 10% that most-other contractors request. On an earlier occasion. I had this company upgrade my ensuite bathroom and the end-result that I would give would be a 6 out of 10 (and that's being generous). Would I hire this company to do work for me again? Definitely not.

Approximate cost of services:
$13,000.00

Company Response

Dear Mr. and Mrs. M.

I am sorry to hear you were dissatisfied and did not live up to your expectations with the work QEW Contracting performed at your home.

We have always taken much pride in the work we do for our customers over the many years we have been in business.

We’re known for our exceptional customer service and quality of work. You can see from our reviews of our work and services that most customers are incredibly happy with QEW. It is also a vital part of our business that any issues raised by our customers are to be taken seriously. We have always strived to do the best work we can for our customers.

We were surprised to read your recent review in HomeStars.

When your bathroom reno was completed in 2018, you told us you were happy with the reno.
There were a couple small issues, i.e., shower door and countertop, but we addressed them to your satisfaction.

Regarding the staining of the stairs, we were told at the time the work was completed and paid for in full (early 2022) you were completely satisfied with the outcome of the work. So, once again, we were surprised to hear about your concerns.

I would genuinely appreciate it if you would kindly call me at 905 265.8860 so we can have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and to come up with a plan that satisfactorily meets your expectations.

Thank you. Saverio Patella
