3/10

This is a review for work that was done in August 2010. I have lived with the paint work for almost a year and waited to write this review to see if my initial dissatisfaction would change, which it has not. My husband and I were moving into our house shortly before I was due to give birth, so we wanted to have some interior painting done before we moved in. As a result, we did not have much time to interview painters, as we only had limited access to the house. I got quotes from Rennaissance, another independent painter, and I had hoped to get a quote from a third company but they did not show up for the appointment. I found Jason from Rennaisance to be personable, but overly aggressive in his sales approach. As soon as he stepped foot in the house he started pointing out imperfections and talking about work that they could do that I was not even considering and had not asked him about. Although we found them to be quite expensive, we ended up hiring Renaissance because they promised to repair cracks/wallpaper seems in our walls/ceilings to make them look smoother/give them a facelift, which the other painter would not do, so we thought we were getting more for our money. Overall, I was and continue to be really disappointed with the result, given what they promised. Cracks/wallpaper lines in our walls and ceilings were not concealed, as promised, and are still obvious. They did not use primer in one of the rooms and painted a cream coloured paint overtop a bright turquoise, such that the turquoise colour seems to be bleeding through the cream colour. It also looks like they ran out of paint and did not do enough coats in this room. I have asked friends/family what colour they think the room is supposed to be and most are not sure. They also forgot to finish painting the wood border around one of our closet doors (on the inside of the closet). It is only partially painted. I have also found spots where they did not properly paint around window frames, such that there are small patches of the underlying paint colour that are apparent. Overall, I feel they over-promised and under-delivered and as a result, over charged as well. I realize that Rennaissance has many positive reviews, which is another reason why I hired them, but they dropped the ball with our job.

First things's first - Ben was fabulous to deal with. He was excellent at explaining the work that needed to be done and was very prompt at getting back to me by phone and email. Dealing with Ben made the headache of needing a new roof less stressful. This is a company that really cares about the quality of the work they do. Ben did an emergency repair for us at the last minute on a Friday, knowing that the weekend forecast called for intense rain. The actual roofing job got pushed back a bit because of weather, but that was understandable. The roof was replaced within 2 days. The cedar siding took longer than expected, but this is only because Roman is a meticulous artist with regard to cutting and placing the cedar pieces. He even took the time to make changes when I noted that I was not fond of the checkered pattern the different colours of cedar were making on a small part of the fronting. The crew was also quite good about keeping the area tidy during the work, and about cleaning our property afterwards. I have already recommended Luc's Roofing to a friend, and will continue to recommend them to others without reservation.
