When we moved to Wolfville in mid-2020, we would often drive by a house with a mature garden on a lot similar to ours - a long lot with a slope up from the street to the porch. It is a stunning garden, so much so that I enquired about its provenance. I was told that the owner of Maritime Landscape Services had designed and built it 16 years ago, so I tracked him down.
The owner has an amazing life story that is built around his passion for horticulture. We shared with him our desire for a showpiece garden that would complement the renovation we've been doing, along with our status as neophyte gardeners worried about maintenance and upkeep.
After agreeing to take us on, and promising to deliver the showpiece, we discussed what we wanted (in the vaguest of terms because of our lack of knowledge regarding flowers and plants). He came back with a plan, on tracing paper drawn to scale with a pencil. It's an old school approach that is less flashy than the 3D renderings others produce using modern software, but you have to remember that you're hiring someone who has forgot more about horticulture than the rest combined!
The project was scoped at 6 weeks and was brought in on time and on budget. The choice and variety of plants, trees and grasses is already starting to fill in. We get to enjoy our garden and observe the passers by slow down and point as they drive by on Main St, which tells us that the owner of Maritime Landscape Services did indeed deliver the showpiece garden he promised.
