Interlock driveway and walkway

Alex the salesman said that our planned interlock project complied with the Markham driveway bylaws and he also promised the project could be started in 2 weeks when we signed the contract on September 18, 2009.

However, the next day a Markham bylaw officer said that the project did not meet Markham driveway standards and we had to alter our project.

We decided to go ahead, but it was a month later that any work started. When the company did do something, they ripped out the asphalt of the driveway on Oct 15, 2009 and left it with only gravel for another month. You can imagine the inconvenience of a bumpy driveway where we have to drive not only over the curb, but also a sidewalk.

As November approached, I had to call the company daily to get them to finish the work. They initially said that the stones were out of stock. But when I contacted the supplier, they said they had the stones in stock. So I really called them to finish the job before winter came. The project was finally finished on November 12, 2009.

After the spring, it became evident that the workmanship was poor. The driveway already was beginning to sag and the interlock stones were flaking.

I called Alex the salesman in April 2010, and he said not to worry, that everything was covered by the warranty. A month passed and there was still no contact from the company. I called again and once again Alex assured me that everything was okay.

Then I sent a registered letter to the company, outlining the issues with the project on June 5, 2010. Still no response. I finally found an alternate number, and the person said that the sagging was our problem and he would consider changing the flaking stones.

I am resigned to the fact that the interlock project is going to be what it is and the warranty is not going to be honored.

This project is an expensive lesson on thinking through your purchases carefully and to research your potential contractors carefully. So for those considering any project with IPAC Paving, make the right decision by skipping to the next name on your potential list of contractors!
