Can't recommend this builder based on our experience

This review concerns KLP Construction, from which my wife and I purchased a new home in Campbell River in the summer of 2020.

We were prepared for the odd thing to go wrong with this home, but not for the more than a dozen issues we have faced during the past three years.

Almost all of those issues have been relatively minor, including, for example, a poor-quality interior paint job, poor post-construction cleanup, 3 leaky bathroom faucets, 2 cracked bathroom sinks and, bizarrely, glass light shades that fell off their mounts and smashed to pieces in the ensuite. Any problem that was eligible for repair or replacement under the new home warranty during the first 2 years was addressed, although in a few cases it took months and we felt we had to resort to filing warranty claims because our relationship with the builder had soured.

However, this year after the expiry of the 2-year new home warranty our heat pump, which had already been repaired under warranty during our first winter in the new home, began failing to maintain a heating temperature of 21 C. We spent months and about $1,200 in labour costs (the heat pump was still covered by a warranty on parts) trying to have it fixed before deciding there was no point in investing in it further and we should replace it. So, in addition to the money and time we have lost trying to fix this lemon, plus the extra cost of heating our home using auxiliary electric heat, we now will be more than $10,000 out of pocket replacing our basic, faulty heat pump with a better-quality, more-efficient model. The new heat pump also will be bigger, because the consensus of the 3 estimators who gave us quotes for a new system is that our existing 2-ton heat pump is undersized. Two of the quotes we received were for 2.5-ton systems, and the third was for a 3-ton system. As well, all the quotes included upgrades to our ductwork, which estimators told us was on the small side or the minimum.

For all these reasons, we cannot recommend this builder.

Pictures accompanying this review show items we discovered in our ductwork within a couple of months of moving into our home as well as sloppiness in the interior painting job and a smashed light shade after it had fallen off its mount in the ensuite.

Approximate cost of services:
$609,000.00
