Painting a dining room table

Only Dee and Cameron could be trusted with this job! I couldn't risk an amateur-looking result so I turned again to Colourworks because they have always delivered AMAZING service and GREAT results with every project I've undertaken with them. They're totals pros. I didn't expect to have the table in time for Christmas because I called them in December - a heavy, deadline-driven time of year in their profession. But they fit me in and Christmas happened at my "new" table. The table has completed my new home and the new look I was trying to achieve. I can't thank them enough for their service except to remain a loyal client.

I'm so glad you like how your table turned out, and that we could help you in time for Christmas. It helped immensely that you were flexible with all the back-and-forth trips we needed to complete the multiple stages. There's no substitute for curing time when it comes to painting a table, and even though it can make the process slow and cumbersome, the results will speak for themselves for years to come. Thanks again for giving us the challenge, and we wish you many great gatherings around the table in the new year. :D

Interior + Exterior painting

As a General Contractor my reputation is only as good as the various
trades who work on our projects. In the case of Colourworks what I appreciate the most is their high level of professionalism in all aspects - communication before and after the work is done, explaining the work to my clients in an understandable fashion, showing up on time, leaving a tidy job site and most of all, doing the absolute best job possible. This all starts with the standards set by Dee who is a pro through and through.

Lifesaving Heroes

When I decided to list my condo, I needed to get quality paint work and some smaller maintenance stuff done. I had no idea what I was doing and didn't have much experience with contractors. I popped into the Benjamin Moore store up the street, asked for a referral, and they gave me Dee's number. When I called Dee, I heard back within the hour, and he had my project scheduled before the end of the week, despite the fact that his team was already jam packed with jobs. He also sent me one of his best guys - Cam - who was just an amazing solutions guru, hard worker, and great guy. The quality of work is impeccable, and the service (and kindness) is remarkable.

My go-to for all future painting and renos for sure.

Exterior Paint Work

I contacted Dee to paint a portion of our exterior that is just below our roof. It's a very difficult point in the exterior to access and Dee was quick to provide a thorough quote and even highlighted the potential need for a lift if the ladder was not accessible to the area. Once the project was confirmed Dee scheduled us in the next week (weather permitting). The painters arrived on time and were polite and professional. Denis was the manager on site and he did a great job! The final product looks fantastic and they even cleaned up the debris that fell onto our lawn. Overall the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Dee was always available and quick to respond to questions. I plan on using ColourWorks for our future projects.

Thank you, Lisa. I'm so happy we were able to help you with this tricky little project. And thank you for being so patient with the unfortunate weather-delays. It's so important to us, that the exterior of your home is painted in just the right conditions for adhesion, so you won't have to worry about it again for as long as possible. You've been an absolute pleasure to work with, and we'll welcome any opportunity to paint for your again when you need us. :D

Bright Fresh Fast and Friendly

I found Dee and his crew on Homestars. they were quick to respond and show up for a quote. I was pleasantly surprised by the cost. The detail to which Dee went through as to what was to be included and what was not was exceptional.
He accommodated my finicky timeline and his team finished the job faster than anticipated. The transformation is phenomenal.
Cameron and Dale were friendly and did an excellent job of cleaning up when completed. I would recommend ColourWorks to anyone needing professional, efficient and conscientious work.

A sterile condo turned relaxing retreat

Over a year ago we moved into a pre-construction condo, with bare white primer painted walls. Everywhere. When we finally decided it was time to get some colour on the walls, we got a recommendation from a family member. Dee and his team did not disappoint. From our initial consultation, Dee spent over an hour with us, helping select colours and identify the best use of our money. That was a win for us. There were many rooms that needed to be painted, we didn't want to do it ourselves and we didn't want it to break the bank. With some initial ideas on paint colours, Dee helped us select colours that fit our space and our design tastes. Dee quickly scheduled for his crew to come the following week - and knowing that we had a party on the Saturday, he made sure to have our living room and powder room completed. His crew - Cameron and Chad - did such an amazing job, and we know this was money well spent. Even though they were in our home for 3 days, there presence was surprisingly noninvasive. I cannot say enough good things about their professionalism and quality of work. If I ever need a painter again in the future I know who I'm going to call!

That's awesome, Jennifer. You and Eric we're fantastic to work with, especially having done so much of your own homework on colours before I got there. My guys thought you were wonderful, too.

Thanks again for choosing us to personalize your home, and we'll look forward to any time you need us in future. :D

home painting project

In February 2017, my husband and I contacted ColourWorks to paint the main living space of our home including the living room, kitchen and all hallways. After a pleasant meeting with Dee to discuss work to be completed, Cameron was assigned as project manager for the week long project, with Chad accompanying him for the first two days of work. Both were great to interact with. As a very detailed-oriented client, I appreciated Cameron taking the time to go over his work plan for the day every morning and providing me with a short debrief at the end of each day. He was professional, good-humoured and skilled in his craft, all of which resulted in making this a successful project.

Positive experience

Dee, Cameron and crew did a great job painting the entire interior of our home. Dee was helpful in suggesting colour choices. Cameron and crew were very pleasant to have around and did very high quality work, cleaning up after each day. They would definitely be our choice for any future painting jobs.

Home Painting

We hired Dee to paint some of our interior rooms (entrance way, hallway, kitchen, laundry room and basement bedroom), including trim, etc. The whole experience was very pleasant and Dee provided some excellent advice on colour choices (I was going mad with numerous swatches throughout my home) and paint finishes. The paint job itself was excellent - Dale Butt did a great job in all rooms and cleaned up nicely after all was complete. We are very happy with the results and would definitely recommend Colourworks.

Brutal experience!! See photos and decide for yourself.

Hello,

My finance and I hired Dee to paint our home based on the HomeStars reviews and the positive experience we got when meeting him. We were promised exceptional results however the experience was quite the opposite.

- Their patching work was very sloppy
- They did not lightly sand my newly installed crown moulding before painting as was promised
- Their painting was sloppy
- They did a poor job protecting my brand new stairs when painting the stringers and risers which resulted in paint leaking along the edge of my stairs. This will be very difficult to clean up as the paint does not come off easily.

Dee - You need to take responsibility for the mess your guys made in my home!! I want you to send someone to clean this up or return my money so I can hire professional painters!!!

Sincerely,
Michael

Dear Mr. Okulicz,

Firstly, let me say once again, how truly sorry we are that your experience was not as we all hoped, and that we were not able to complete our work at your request.

We take our work very seriously, and with the highest regard for our customers. I can assure you there was no aspect of this job that my paint-crew could not have completed successfully, if given the opportunity to do so. The pictures you've opted to include here, are of surfaces they had yet to complete, and does not represent our finished work. Pictures of our finished work on similar surfaces, can be seen on our website.

Although I seem to have regrettably failed in this case, it is my policy and practice to gather all pertinent information during the estimate process, to ensure we provide the exact services most important to each customer, and manage expectations with open, honest communication. After all, we don’t like surprises any more than our customers do.

During our extensive initial meeting, you had expressed repeated disappointment with your previous painters and other trades you had fired throughout your year-long renovation. It was entirely my intention to help you overcome those bad experiences by delivering the good work we do routinely everyday for our customers. With aims to achieve that, I listened to your concerns, noted the areas you wanted us to focus on improving the appearance of, and explained how we would address those issues to finish the work done by others, to meet your standards. I also pointed out structural defects that would not be addressed as part of a typical painting project (as in: can’t be fixed by paint), and reviewed with you the Industry Standard which defines the makings of an acceptable painted surface.

When I believed we had reached an understanding of expectations and scope of work, I had genuine sympathy for you living on a job site for so long, and sincerely wanted to help you finish-off your project once and for all, so you and your fiancée could finally move-in your furniture, and start enjoying your home, and your life together.

So, we were surprised when my crew learned from you on the first day of the job, that you wanted them to perfect your previous trades’ hundreds of repaired tiny nail-holes on the crown mouldings that for all intents and purposes were finished. But without question, they began working to refine those details for you, anyway. These imperfections were not obvious without magnification from a normal viewing position, and certainly not visible to me, nor pointed out or discussed specifically in our meeting. Rather, I was simply asked if we would sand the crown before painting, which is a standard practice.

Day two, you pointed out several other items you wanted addressed more thoroughly on the crown and wall repairs, and more sanding was done on the crown to minimize the tiny peaks raised by the nails, along with its first coat of paint. But for the majority, the crew focused their attention that day on the much larger task of painting your 5 levels of staircase risers and stingers, which they almost completed.

A great deal of work was accomplished in these two days, and yet, at the end of the second day, you asked us to stop the work, even though nothing was in finished-form yet.

So, with respect and recognition that we were not going to be able to completely satisfy you, which is our priority with every customer, we agreed to leave the job to make way for you to select another contractor you were more comfortable with.

It was also our aim, that by leaving you with all the top-line Benjamin Moore paints we had purchased to complete the job, and the Frog-tape left installed to protect your steps, you would be free of having to pay your next painter for these materials, and for the time to install new tape.

It’s quite common for paint to bleed a little around the edges when it’s on a wood grain surface such as your steps, even through Frog-tape. We use this more-expensive masking-tape to minimize this type of bleed-though, and minimize clean-up in the end. It’s far better than using conventional painter tape, but we do expect some bleed on textured surfaces like this, and I’m only sorry we weren’t there to complete the job, which would naturally have included cleaning off these tiny paint-stragglers. Whichever professional you hired to complete the risers after us, would have had to clean it themselves even if they re-masked them. But since only a few risers needed their last coat, and the rest only needed touch ups, this way, we’ve left you with less time and expense needed to complete the work very easily, rather than if your new painter were to re-tape all 30+ stairs again.

So, for the breakdown in communication about the full scope of work, which I should have perhaps investigated more deeply during the estimate, and for which contributed to your decision to have my crew stop their work despite their best efforts, I can only apologize; and you will receive no further billing for the balance of labour and materials otherwise owed.

Sincerely, and without bias,

DEE L POTTER
Owner
