25% increase in agreed price, sent to collections

I asked for a price which was given the price for some very straight forward work. He comes back after being half way done and says its 25% more and has the nerve to say he is giving me a deal as the landscaping's worth 50% above original price. We state we will pay the original price which we do and than he sends us to collections! No contract signed with him so he figures he will take advantage of us!
