Kitchen/Bathroom Counter Replacement and Cabinet Refacing

In August 2016, Michael (the owner) came to my condo to take measurements for a countertop replacement, and cabinet refacing for my kitchen and 2 bathrooms, and provided a quote. Michael was nice enough, and I agreed to proceed. An installation day was scheduled.

On the day of installation, I received a phone call from the installer stating that he was nearly done, but unfortunately, the walls in my kitchen weren’t true 90 degree angles. Therefore, the counter started flush against the wall on one side, but there was a ‘small’ gap on two lengthy areas on either side of the kitchen. He said it was fine and he filled it with caulking. It didn’t look ‘that bad.’ <verbatim> When I arrived after the installer had left, the caulking job that I found was an atrocity. The small gaps were closer to ¾” and the caulking was flooding the gap and all over the wall. The caulking job in the two bathrooms were just as terrible. Additionally, there were two large pieces of flashing that weren’t replaced (vertical pieces alongside the lower and upper cabinets).

The following day I called Futuric to request someone to come back to fix the issue. At that time, I had asked to have the kitchen counter redone because the job was really quite poor. Futuric decided they would rather come out and try and fix the issue by adding a piece of laminate to the top of the gap and apply caulking again. A different installer came out, and attempted to fix the large gap in the kitchen counter, the caulking job in the bathrooms, and install the missing flashing. Unfortunately, this result was much worse in the kitchen. The bathroom caulking job was barely an improvement, and the flashing was missed altogether.

It took me several calls to Futuric in order to request the counter in the kitchen to be replaced before someone finally replied. After some discussion, I was finally able to convince the owner to replace the kitchen counter at a time of my choice in the future. I requested having this in writing. At the same time, I asked an installer to come out and install the missing flashing and take a 3rd crack at fixing the caulking in the bathrooms. The one bathroom caulking was fixed, but I’m fairly certain the ensuite bathroom wasn’t looked at. Additionally, only ONE piece of flashing was replaced. Still had one unchanged……!! I attempted to text and call the installer on several occasions to schedule yet another time for him to come back and replace the final piece of flashing. He stopped responding.

Recently, I decided to get the kitchen counter replaced as I wanted to end this seemingly never ending experience with Futuric. Due to the very poor caulking job in the bathroom, one of the laminate countertops had already bubbled and was ruined. Of note, and full disclosure, I had tenants living in the unit and they had let a lot of water rest on the sink counter. I’m confident however, that if the caulking job was done correctly, the countertop would not have been ruined. As an act of good faith, I asked Futuric to replace the counter at no charge to me as I felt it would have been a nice gesture. The owner offered it at cost which I felt was unfair. Perhaps I should have accepted, but I thought that a reputable company would show a bit more courtesy to their customers in which had had an experience such as mine.

The kitchen counter was replaced. The final piece of flashing was FINALLY replaced!!

I would have hoped that a company that has been in business for 40 years, would know that not all walls are true 90 degree angles. Measuring the entire kitchen would be an important step in your process as opposed to just making rough estimates. For that reason, I am now perceived as the bad guy because I spent nearly $5000 for a job, that I had to badger the company about to have completed. And I am still left with a bubbled, ruined bathroom counter that is 8 months old.

TL;DR I would highly advise finding a different company for your kitchen/cabinet needs. There are many out there and I can assure you they will provide a better service than Futuric.

Approximate cost of services:
$4,800.00
