Replace Old Shingle Roof with New Steel Roof

We contracted with Roofmaster for a new steel shingle roof after looking at several bids for asphalt shingles and one other bid for a rival steel shingle. We liked the product and the price was competitive. We were very impressed by the service and professional attitude of the foreman and his crew.

Approximate cost of services:
$21,000.00

Thanks John for your kind review. The stone-coated steel shingles we installed on your roof are generally pretty rare and unique in the roofing industry. It's a worthwhile investment as the longevity of the roof far exceeds any asphalt or fibreglass shingle. If anyone is looking to upgrade from standard asphalt shingles, the stone coated steel shingles are a great option. They prevent snow from easily sliding off the roof usually common on a smooth steel roof. In addition, at first glance they look like an asphalt shingle roof due to the coloured stones embedded in the steel. This keeps the general common appearance of most homes in the neighbourhood so it blends in quite well with the neighbouring roofs. Thanks again for the great review! One thing we really appreciate is when we are recommend to your friends and family when they're in need of professional roofing services! -Kershan

New Roof

Called to cancel our service contract with RoofMasters on the 10th day of the cooling off period. We asked for our deposit back. Was told that they do not provide refunds, the contract was binding, they had already paid their salesman and had already purchased our shingles. We did not have an install date set. We argued that we wanted to retink our roofing options and they threatened to sue for damages if we persisted. Options offered by RoofMasters were 1. continue with the job, 2. see you in court, 3. walk away from deposit or 4. give half of the deposit back and sign a binding contract so that NO OTHER company could replace our roof in the next two years without having to pay RoofMasters 75% of the total value of the job.

Company Response

This is not a fully honest or fair complaint. The client did not contact us within the 10 day cooling off period to cancel the contract, which would have been fine by us in accordance with the law. She, in fact, contacted us on the 11th day, and asked for a postponement of the work. To us that was acceptable. She later requested the deposit back in the interim, which was the first indication to us that something did not quite add up in the client's story. A postponement does not usually call for a deposit to be returned. (Perhaps a competitor enticed the client with a lower price as often contractors are desperate for work in the springtime, and thus she was trying to get her money back before actually requesting cancellation. That's just a guess but not uncommon.)
Our response was that the deposit is generally non-refundable, and that we'd happily postpone the work until they were ready - within a reasonable time frame of course. It was when we advised that a deposit was not refundable, that the client became more antagonistic and requested a cancellation. We tried to explain to the client that we were beyond the legal cooling off period that allows for cancellation, that it was a job signed in good faith, that we were counting on the work after a long winter of little to no work for the men, and that the salesman and others involved had already been paid, and so too the had other work within our organization taken place to put the job in progress. As such, the job had already started to cost us money. By returning the deposit we would be in a financial loss. We pointed out that it was our understanding that in law a deposit serves exactly as a guarantee against breaking contracts. Whether its the Federal government cancelling a helicopter contract, or the provincial government cancelling gas contracts, the injured party is usually compensated for the breach, and so as we know, the Feds and Prov govts have had to pay heavy penalties for breaking signed contracts. The same applies in the private sector. Contracts are binding. What would happen if we, as the contractor breached the contract - for example if we promised to put high quality ice shield or shingles, and then cheated with lower grade materials? Would that breach of contract be acceptable? A contract is binding two ways. We have done absolutely nothing wrong, morally, ethically, or legally. There was no misrepresentation whatsoever by our salesmen, or unexpected delay of work by us, to warrant the client losing faith in us and saying she wants to cancel the contract. We had and still have a binding contract with the client to undertake their roofing work. We tried to work with the client to suggest options to delay even up to 2 years, in case they were genuinely in need of the money right away or something like that, and we could give them a break on the timing of doing the work. However, the option the client chose, sadly, was to cancel the contract and to forfeit her deposit - and we have that in writing from the client. We still tried to re-assure the client even after that, that we would still rather undertake her work than just keep the deposit. The next we hear about this, the client has written to Homestars. But this is an absolutely unfair review, as we have not even been given the opportunity to step onto the client's property to do her roof replacement. So what work is being reviewed? This is nothing but a sad attempt to hurt the company's solid reputation when it is the client trying to breach her contractual obligations and using Homestars as a pressure tactic. Her complaint is disingenuous. Such unscrupulous behaviour should not be tolerated from any party to any agreement, whether homeowner or contractor. and we should not end up penalized because of that dishonest review.

Thanks Stew for taking the time to write a review. A lot of homeowners don't realize a steel roof is an option for their home. When installed correctly, they can outlast other types of roofing materials by four or five times. It is a great investment that pays off in the long run! We look forward to hearing from you regarding your eavestrough installation in the future. Thanks Again for the review!

New House Roof

We had the roof replaced on our home in May of 2012. We reside in a very high wind area on the Dunrobin Road and therefore Roofmaster is not the first roofing company we have dealt with over the years. We can truly say that this is the most professional roofing company that we have had on the property. From the appearance of the crew, their work ethic, first class equipment and quality of work exceeded all expectations. The crew chief, Arzan Bulsara was most courteous, as was his crew, and he obviously was well versed in the roofing trade. We would also say that he took great pride in his work. Upon completion of the job, the site was thoroughly cleaned to the point that you would never know that a large crew actually was on site for two days in a row.

It is coming up close to a year now that Roofmaster was on site.We have survived another winter of gale force winds and unrelenting spring gusts and the roof looks as perfect as when it was installed. Not much like the new home being built next door that has already lost a large number of shingles on a 6 month old roof. You definitely get what you pay for by using fly by night roofers.

We have highly recommended Roofmaster to our friends and would do so to anyone looking for quality workmanship in roofing. We will certainly have Roofmaster on site again when it is time to replace the roof on our oversize double garage.

We now have the peace of mind that we have a first class roof with a warranty that is only a phone call away from a local Ottawa firm should the need arise.

What a great review Keith! Even though there is no formal certification needed for roofing companies in Ontario, we ensure our staff are always kept up to date with new products, training, seminars and the like. We work closely with, and get training from manufacturers whenever possible to ensure our employees are well trained and well versed in the industry and the highest quality work is performed at fair prices. You do get what you pay for! Thanks again for the review!
