Great staining job - touch-up work outstanding

I hired Newridge Refinishing Group to strip down my staircase and refinish it.

They did a great job staining my maple stairs and railings. The colour/shade of the stain was consistent with very flew blotchy spots. This was a challenging task given that maple has a very tight grain and doesn’t absorb stain as evenly as oak.

There are still some touch-ups required to the polyurethane finish (streakiness, and wrong sheen applied) and to two of the railings (colour didn’t match on one railing, some spots were missed due to accessibility).

I have decided on a tentative rating of 8/10 as there is still some touch-up work outstanding. These touch-ups are in the process of being addressed. Once the touch-ups are completed, I will finalize this review.

Thus far, it has been a positive experience working with the Newridge Refinishing Group as they are committed to ensuring complete satisfaction and professional client service.

Not the amazing job I was promised! Buyer beware!

I hired this company to strip down my staircase and refinish it. Based on the HomeStar reviews and Scott's promise of fantastic results I decided to give them the job.

However, the end results were not so fantastic. Below are the reasons why:
1. They initially said whoever stained the staircase used the wrong stain. They said it was a terrible stain to use. After poor results with the stains they brought in they used the same stain that they initially said was not the right stain to use. They kept blaming this on the fact that my staircase was maple and was not taking the stain. I have had maple stairs done before in my old home and the maple was stained flawlessly. Overall I would give their staining job a pass as they got the shade pretty consistent. Not the shade they showed me on the sample but still pretty consistent.
2. There were significant drip marks on one railing from the clear coat. They attempted to touch it up which was a fail. They re-stained that piece of railing but it turned out much lighter, fail again. They then re-stained that piece of railing again but it came out a totally different colour, fail once more. I have attached the most recent photo please see for yourself.
3. I asked them to use a matte finish clear coat because I have super matte floors. They used a satin despite my clear instructions for a matte finish. What makes this worse is that I can see all the brush marks from the application of the stain. In my opinion, this just makes the stairs and railings look like a mess. I pointed this out, however they kept blaming it on the temperature in my house which was causing their water based stain to dry to quickly. My temperature was set to 71 which I think is pretty standard. However, it is their responsibility of the contractor to ensure the right conditions for the application of the clear coat, not the home owners.

Scott - You cannot leave my staircase in this shape. Its causing me and my fiance to lose sleep!! I want you to bring in another contractor to disassemble the railing, sand down the uneven streak marks in my shiny clear coat and apply a nice matte finish. There are also a few spots to be touched up too. This might be one day's work for a profession stair guy. Own your mistakes!!!
