DvTonder in Cabbagetown

Built around 1895, the two semi detached homes in Cabbagetown have had many owners. The one half was purchased in 1999 and the other half in 2007. Over the years, the original structures of both homes were modified. The ground floor layout of one was changed in the early 1910’s to create a powder room for a previous owner, who was wheelchair bound due to polio. The front porch was demolished in 1972 and, after a roof fire in 1978, the 3rd floor was renovated with the original bay windows replaced with a more modern style. The other had new bay windows, smaller than the originals, installed in the 50’s but the interior remained unchanged throughout the years. With the help of local Architect Monica Kuhn and contractor Bayden Build and Renovate, restoration of the two homes started in April 2010, focusing on returning them to their former glory. Even though the same family now owns both properties, the intent is to keep them separate but ‘visually joined’. With the prominent position of the building, particular care was taken to ensure the proper restoration of the front façade and restoring the balance between the left and right sides of the building that had been lost since the 1957. Darryl Frankfort (Bayden) was very professional, put up with a very difficult client (one local and the other in another country) and delivered an amazing end product. He came highly recommended and we will gladly pass that recommendation on to any prospective clients.
