Last autumn this contractor required a 50% deposit on a whole-house generator. This was nearly $6000. (In my line of work, I made $38,000 last year, so this is a very large amount for my family.) Consumer Protection Ontario, a government agency, specifically cites large deposits--anything over 10%--as an indication that you might be dealing with what they call "The Disappearing Contractor." Well, that nails it here. After promising that our generator would be among the first to be installed in early spring, he then did not respond to repeated emails and phone calls (always going to voicemail) asking about when that install would happen. Went totally silent. No explanation whatsoever.
