Siding and roofing

Had Contex do some siding and roofing work in 2009. Very happy with their work and had them back in 2011 to do some soffit & fascia work. Very happy once again. Would definitely recommend.

Replacement of flat roof, etc

2 years after our completely new roof was done, it flipped off in a rainstorm in Toronto. Water damaged our third floor. The company is not helping fix this problem, but is making us claim it through our insurance. It is obvious that the roof wasn't done well to begin with, as it was a normal " rainstorm". They should stand behind their work.

Beware. They will take your money upfront and not be there if things go wrong.

Company Response

We stand behind our work, but acts of nature or God are out of our control. We would be out of business if we jumped every time winds exceeded manufacturer’s warranties or animals got through roofs. We install first rate materials and exceed building code requirements to minimalize these kinds of problems. Unfortunately from time to time there are forces beyond our control, and that is what home insurance is for.
My guess is that there were hundreds if not thousands of roof related claims in that time period. We do work for insurance companies and I see this all the time. 0 out of 10 is tough for something that was out of our control. I hope you got it all sorted out.

Siding on Top Part of House

Job did not start on time; delayed by 2 weeks. Had several issues with the siding pulling away from the house & constant loud noise on the 3rd floor whenever the wind blows. (It sounds like a tornado inside the home ever since they installed the siding WITHOUT any support behind - just nailed up sticks of wood and slapped on the aluminum siding).

When we complained about the loud noise, the solution was to add more nails. Great. Now we have lots of nails AND loud noise.

It is very difficult to reach Contex Roofing. Their receptionist answers their phones but they never return your calls. I have left several messages - took months before they would come back out again to 'assess' and then another few more months before they banged in even more nails. During the winter, the siding pulled completely away from the house on the 3rd floor. And now, again, in the summer, the siding has come away from the Coach House. The caulking, after 2 years has separated from the house. It's a very poorly done job. We paid top dollar for crappy workmanship.

There are a lot of dents and bends in the siding.

I feel EXTREMELY RIPPED OFF. I would NEVER, EVER recommend this company. And if they read this review, well, they can save their 'tell us your problem & give us a chance to amend' talk. Just come out and FIX IT!!! We paid to have a good job done, not a crappy job. Yes, it looks fine from the sidewalk (except on certain angles where you can see the bends and where nails have been heavily banged in. Up close - it's a poor job that we overpaid on.

So, if you want a contractor who will hire out another contractor to do the job, and if you want siding installed with lots of gaps and holes - well, this is the company for you.

Recently my neighbours hired a contractor to put siding up on their house. They paid about 1/8th of what we paid Contex Roofing and they also had insulation placed behind the siding - something that Contex Roofing never did when our siding was installed. I wish I were a lot more informed prior to hiring this company.

Company Response

The job was weather contingent, so rain delays jobs, but also high winds. The job was quoted and installed as per Ling’s request. Insulation was not considered because of cost. We came back several times to rectify any issues. Unfortunately we never heard any banging even in high winds. We did go up however and reinforce anywhere we thought might be suspect. The job looks great. We installed vinyl siding on a wood substrate with aluminum capping. There are three different rates of expansion and contraction as a result, which might have contributed to any caulking separating, but we were never informed of this.

I told Ling it might be an exhaust fan vent rattling - she did get the roof replaced right after that by another contractor and we never heard back from her. Also any bent metal against the siding would be the roofer not the siding installer.

I am sorry about your frustration, we were well intentioned Ling. The job looks great, and I hope your banging is gone. 1 out of 10 is pretty tough.

Existing chimney re-seal to side of the house

I'm happy with the final product; chimney seal to side of house properly done and no potential for water causing problems. But it took me noticing the job was only 3/4 done. A call to Contex was received politely and a worker sent out to finish the job. Quality of work great ... but as with most contractors, you have to check the work and ask questions if you are unsatisfied.

Replace series of roof deck membranes in townhouses

I work for a housing co-operative in the east end of Toronto which owns a townhouse complex. Contex replaced 6 patio roof membranes in the complex. The work went fairly well and quite quickly, though the quality of work on aluminum siding repairs, needed after the roofing work was done, was not great. And, after the work was completed, one roof leaked at a joint between the new membrane and an adjacent older patio roof.

Contex showed up within a few hours to deal with the leak. In the meantime the co-op organized water damage remediation. The extent of the damage was relatively minor, a corner of the living room below the patio, but it was a real intrusion into the household involving the use of drying equipment, injection of anti-mould compounds, carpet replacement etc. The co-op paid for this work. They asked Contex to pick up the cost of the water damage remediation except for the carpet, as the carpet was old anyway and due for replacement. While Contex's roofer sub-trade showed up on site to repair the damaged drywall ceiling and patch paint, Contex itself, has refused to accept responsibility for any of the water damage costs claimed by the co-op -- about $2,950.

Company Response

We have done a number of projects for Rod over the years that have been successful, maybe ten projects with no issues unresolved. Can we request 10 out of 10 for the first ten projects Rod? All joking aside, our position is that the adjacent balcony was in failing condition already. It is hard to tie into a roof with very little integrity. We were prepared to pay for the repairs to the drywall but we disputed the clean up costs. Sometimes when insurance companies are called in, the SWAT team pulls up and costs seem inflated and sensationalized. Having said all this, we felt we were being reasonable noting that the other balcony could have been leaking for some time anyway. Sorry Rod, maybe we can make it up on the next one.

New troughs

We had all our troughs replaced by contex in the late fall. The product is good, the price is very competitive and the installation went quite smoothly.

My main complaint would be that the customer service is a bit lacking. When calling to confirm appointments or to report problems, calls are often unreturned. They'll come and fix the problem but without a returned phone call it's hard to known whether an issue is addressed or not.

Company Response

Thank you for your feed back Chris. Your points are well noted. In the past we have scheduled service calls for the day, and the technicians see the customers in a different order, and they do not call ahead. It is an area of weakness, and we are working to improve the service end of the business.

I am happy that our prices were competitive and that our installation went smoothly. Thanks again for your feed back Chris.

Cedar & Asphalt Shingles, Chimney, Copper Flashing, Eaves Troughs & Downspouts

As a recent home buyer, it was determined in our house inspection that the cedar shingles at the front of our house would last for approx. less than a year and the asphalt shingles 2-3 years left. There were also other issues that existed due to neglect from the previous owner. This was to be a large and expensive job and therefore we needed to find the right roofing company to do this job.

In a day where I had three roofing companies come to the home to provide quotes, Steve Washbrook from Context was the most professional taking digital photos, comprehensive measurements and drawings and willing to negotiate the price for our comprehensive renovation. They were even patient when at the last minute I had to delay the signing of the contract when the vendor of the home changed a pre-arranged visit to the property and other issues due to the closing of the sale of the home.

Once work began, the various crews that they sent to the house were professional, polite, and worked very hard to get the job done efficiently and effectively from the beginning to the end.

The only issue that arose was there was slight damage from 3 roofing nails that went through the drywall in one of the skylights but the company from the owner down was proactive and arranged to have the issue remedied immediately after I made them aware of it.

I have subsequently recommended this Company to one other recent home buyer and would not hesitate to do this again in the future. I have even arranged through them to broker a new wrought iron railing with another company and this work will begin within the next month. We have received several compliments from our new neighbors and we definitely feel we went with the right roofing company.

Replacement of both peaked and flat roof

This company was amazing. From the consultant Steve to the two sets of roofers and the person dropping the bin. All who were involved were friendly and very professional. When work was complete clean-up was done. Can't say enough about this company, and would definately recommend them to my friends. Thank-you so much. Sincerely, Carol Thomas

Phil and the context team were great. They beat a competitors price, offered great service and the job was done fast can clean. I saw the guys arrive and get started and didn't even know when they left...all was done and it looked great. I had one adjustment that needed to be made and it was done in a timely manner. Thanks again.

flat roof deck replacement and roof repairs

There is no question about the professionalism of the staff in the inital site meetings and receiving quotes. They provide photos which can be sent electronically and the quote arrives in a timely fashion and they are competitive.

They are very good with the quality of their installation and with their cleanup but you will need to inspect the area at the end of the job for the finer things like repairing divets and lawn replacement. They are respectful of their clients - I am in property management and did not receive any complaints from my tenants. They do take their warranties seriously and do return to do repairs in a timely fashion.

The area they fall down in is in their communication. I found it difficult to get ahold of my contacts and when I left messages the return call was not very quick which meant I was chasing after them. If I made specific requests or gave instructions (outside of the actual installation)there wasn't compliance all the time nor any explanation as to why unless I brought the subject up.

And don't expect a project manager on the site even if you put it into your spec. They will assign one of the installers to do that job.

If you have the time to chase after them and inspect the work you will be satisfied.
