This all depends on your jurisdictions bylaws. Typically a fence is 6’ in height.

Backyard fences You can usually go up to about 2.0 metres (around 6.5 feet). This is the standard for privacy fences and is widely accepted. Front yard fences Typically limited to about 1.2 metres (around 4 feet). The idea is to keep visibility open for safety and neighborhood appearance. Corner lots or near driveways There are stricter visibility rules. Even a lower fence may need to be reduced in height near intersections so drivers can see clearly. Pool fences If you’re enclosing a pool, the fence must meet specific safety requirements (often around 1.2 to 1.5 metres minimum with self-closing gates). Important reality check Even if a height is “allowed,” placement, style, and proximity to property lines can still affect approval. Before you build It’s always smart to check the local by-law or confirm with the City of Oshawa. A quick confirmation now can save you from tearing down a finished fence later. If you want, tell me where on your property you’re planning the fence front side backyard or corner and I can give you a more precise answer.

It really depends on your location with local byelaws and subdivision bylaws. Some new subdivisions have special requirements for fence height and style for the area versus other areas just fall under the municipal bylaws.

Backyard and Side Yard Fences In most Durham Region municipalities, residential backyard and side yard fences are generally permitted up to approximately 2.0–2.2 metres (6.5–7.2 feet) in height. These height limits are commonly used for privacy fencing and are subject to municipal by-laws and site-specific restrictions. Front Yard Fences Front yard fences are typically subject to lower height restrictions to preserve visibility, pedestrian safety, and neighbourhood aesthetics. Depending on the municipality, front yard fence heights are generally limited to approximately 0.9–1.0 metre (3–3.3 feet). Open-style decorative fencing may be permitted at greater heights in certain locations. Corner Lots and Driveway Visibility Areas Properties located on corner lots or adjacent to driveways are subject to additional sightline requirements. Fences located within designated sight triangles may be restricted to a maximum height of approximately 0.9 metre (3 feet) to maintain safe visibility for drivers and pedestrians. Pool Enclosures Swimming pools, hot tubs, and similar water features must be enclosed in accordance with applicable municipal pool enclosure by-laws. Requirements typically include a minimum fence height, self-closing gates, and self-latching hardware to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access.
