Women’s Day Success Story: Cover Me Window Decor

Valeire Outmezguine, owner of Cover Me Window Decor in her office

Even as the demand for skilled trades is on the rise, there are still many challenges faced by women in this industry. However, there are some women who are breaking barriers and carving a space for themselves in this industry. Recently, we spoke to Valerie Outmezguine, owner of Cover Me Window Decor, and recipient of the Best of Award, to talk about women-led businesses, the challenges that come with it and more…

Let’s Start At The Beginning…

Years ago I was working in a corporate setting and I didn’t feel fulfilled with the work or the job environment. So I met with a business coach who suggested some ideas which included window coverings. I was really drawn to this idea because it incorporated a creative outlet for me. I did a lot of research and even looked into a franchise, but ultimately decided that starting my own business from the ground up made the most sense. I started ‘Cover Me Window Decor’ nine years ago and haven’t looked back.

Standing Apart From The Competition…

Valerie believes in offering exceptional customer service each time to both old and new clients to really stand out amidst the competition.

I go into all of my appointments – new or repeat clients – with the same attitude. I really focus on the overall design and function in a client’s home, while ensuring that the client feels comfortable with the process and their final decision. Open communication and transparency are key, and I aim to give my clients a positive experience that is simple and straightforward so they don’t feel overwhelmed. Their positive feedback tells me that I’m doing my job well.

On Joining HomeStars…

I wanted to add to my business’ credibility. I liked that people can find reviews from clients I’ve worked with in the past, along with photos of my work. It helps them feel assured knowing that other people have used my services and had great experiences. This makes the hiring process a lot easier for them.

The Impact Of HomeStars…

I enjoy using the HomeStars platform and app. It has introduced me to new clients and projects that I wouldn’t have found on my own. So it has worked as a great marketing tool for my business which has helped spread the digital work-of-mouth for my work.

Tips On Asking For Reviews…

As Valerie ensures customer satisfaction from the start to the finish, she believes in a straightforward approach to asking for reviews, when the project is completed.

Don’t be shy about asking for a review from the people who use your service.

Thoughts On Being A Woman Entrepreneur…

My industry can be viewed as male-dominant (suppliers, installers, sales reps, etc.) so I’ve had to be very conscious of this. To succeed I’ve made sure to keep a high level of professionalism, be up-to-date with the latest products and trends, as well as expand my technical knowledge. Owning a business has allowed me to grow in every way. From thinking differently about my work to building a thicker skin, and moving forward no matter the challenge.

Thoughts On Juggling Motherhood And A Business…

It’s all about finding a balance between my work and the time I spend with my child. I am very lucky to have a supportive family, and also a reliable team to assist me with the work.

Words For Women Wanting To Launch Their Business…

Do enough research so that you feel comfortable in the space, then jump in. There’s never an ideal time. And work hard. The more effort you put into it, the more results you’ll see. People keep sharing the same advice because it’s true. Owning a business is difficult and you will need to wear every hat imaginable to succeed. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Thoughts On Winning The Best Of Award…

I’m proud to say that I’ve been a Best of Award winner six times now. It means that prospective clients can feel confident in moving forward with me. I will publicize the win on my social media channels to help spread the word and make more homeowner connections.
