I have just finished cleaning our kitchen floor from the glue left by our contractor Daniel (company name DPI) and I am even too tired to be angry. It was a small project or rather still is because we need to finish unfinished job left by Daniel and his worker. Please read small review that might save you from the problems we are currently dealing with. More than one week ago we employed Daniel to install backsplash in our kitchen (around 33 SF). When we met him he made good impression. He seemed to be skilled and experienced contractor thus we have decided to ask him to do the job. Now I know I made two mistakes – the first do not believe your first impression and check all possible references. If you have at least one doubt you should not hire the contractor. Daniel and his worker started the job on time as they promised. After 7 hours when they finished they first day of work I have decided to check how their work look like and I couldn’t even say one word during the one minute when I saw the results. Tiles were laid so unevenly in all directions that the worst handy man could not do it. The horizontal lines were waving, no one single edge was level. The worst was one corner where the different between lines was even half o a tile. The gaps between the tiles were also uneven, ranging from standard 1/8” to 0. Many tiles were pushed too hard towards the wall that the others were sticking out by 1/8”. A lot of the tiles at the top layer did not have enough adhesive and started falling off. The gap between top row of tiles and underside of cabinets was between 1/4” and 5/8” and left not filled with anything. Electrical box extensions were not installed – Daniel told us they are not necessary and that he will install receptacles using longer bolts. Maybe this can be done in this way when you know what you are doing. We asked Daniel to correct his job but for our surprise and disappointment he refused to do it. After he and his worker left our home we were we thinking what to do. Knowing we might not find the contractor who finishes the job of other contractor we have decided to do the best to save this project. We have purchased extra adhesive and spacers, and spent more than 5 hrs correcting Daniel’s job. We had to remove 7 large areas of tiles and a lot of single tiles and reinstall them one by one. Next day Daniel and his worker came with few hours of delay to continue their job. After four hours there was only a little improvement. The tiles were left very dirty. Two days later he came to do the grouting. They started with the cleaning the tiles and Daniel said they will be all cleaned, shiny and not scratched. What was the surprise when they finished the job. The tiles The tiles still were dirty. The ground on the corners was uneven. The glue was left on walls. Some edges were left unfinished but they said they have finished the work job began. That was big, big disappointment. However we paid them for very poor quality job and decided to finish what was left ourselves believing this is over of our problems. How mistaken we have been. About an hour later we finished cleaning our kitchen and decided it was time to turn on electrical circuits which, for everyone’s safety, were off all the time since start of the job. To our surprise one of the circuit breakers was tripping and we noticed sparks coming from one of the above counter receptacles. After some investigations I noted that cable in this receptacle was punctured by too long bolt Daniel has used to compensate for additional wall thickness added by backsplash tiles. When I slightly pulled the receptacle, two wires, one in black insulation (hot) and one bare (ground), came off the sheathing. Bolt was partly melted by heat from short-circuit. Wires were broken just 1/2” from the clamp. When I requested Daniel to come back and repair the damages, he refused. In summary, Daniel represents very low knowledge, experience and workmanship compare not only to what he promises, but to any average handyman or DIY person. He made not only terrible job, but also left us with unfinished project and full of anger. Moreover, damaging electrical system in our home was much more than lack of Daniel’s knowledge and experience. This was his unimaginable negligence of the safety of my family and property. Considering all the above I do not recommend anyone to hire Daniel for any, even the simplest project. Hiring Daniel is a waste of money and best way to stress and frustration.
