We had our doors replaced by Dodds a number of years ago but didn't replace the automatic openers. We were very happy with the doors but the old openers started to fail after a few more years use. Today we had the openers upgraded to 3/4 hp. Amazing difference. Very easy to use. Remote has both doors on it and can be used on my key chain. Great key pad outside and very quiet action. Very happy!

We have a 4 zone sprinkler system on about 1/3 acre that had originally been installed probably about 30 years ago by the previous owner. When we moved in we spent about $1000 upgrading the control panel and all the heads - about 7 years ago. Everything seemed okay but this year the system would not come on. The manifold valves would not open with the signal from the panel and they seemed to be leaking when put on manually. There had been a number of very hot days and no rain. The grass was looking pretty poor. Cali-Green was working in the neighbourhood since we could see a number of their signs. We called the number and I spoke to Serge. This was the Saturday before Father's day. He said he would drop in to look at it later that afternoon. After taking a look he said that he normally does not repair sprinklers but generally installs new systems. Since we had refurbished the system, I was not ready to do that. He told us that the manifold valves are about $150 each x 4 plus installation. It would be $1000 plus tax. After he left, we talked about it and texted Serge that we were okay with going forward and could he fit us in soon. Amazingly he said he would come the next day - Sunday - Father's day! They spent about 3 hours and got most of the job done digging, replacing and rewiring. They left just before 3 and Serge said he would be back the next evening to finish the connections and show us how the system works. He came by the following evening. He had a bit of frustration with a rain sensor that we had installed previously that seemed to be causing a problem. In the end the system works great and the grass is looking better already. Thanks Serge and crew for your diligence and taking time away from your families on Father's Day!

Our attic needed insulation since it was only about R15 and there was some disturbed due to other renovations. We contacted Wojtek through the company website. After a very prompt response we agreed to a date for a quote. Wojtek let us know that the existing insulation was okay to leave and they would top up to R60. He emailed a quote later that day and was able to book the work the following week at our request. He was able to fit us in. The quote included the soffit baffles and repair of a leaky bathroom exhaust vent. A two hour window was provided for the start of the job. The two man crew arrived on time and placed drop cloths. The whole job took just over two hours including clean up. One suggestion would be to leave the hose outside until actually needed as the front door was partially open for the entire time on a cold and windy day. The first 45 minutes were spent installing the baffles and the hose was not needed inside. Otherwise we are extremely pleased with the job and can already feel the difference in our ensuit where the insulation had been the thinnest. We should have done this a long time ago and we would recommend Ecocomfort.

We had a recommendation from a good friend who had just used VIP to spray foam his gutted basement. We contacted the company and arranged a quote. Walt came out to give a quote on our 1500 square foot basement outside walls. We agreed to the standard R14 on the walls and R20 in the joist headers. We agreed to a mutually convenient date within a few weeks. The whole job took about 5 hours. Excess foam was nicely trimmed and all debris was removed. We didn't have to leave the house and there was no bad odor. This is a small family run business and we were very happy with all our dealings and the end result.

We ordered a 15 yard bin for 9 days (two weekends) for basement debris from the beginning of our reno. It was extremely easy to order. When I needed to update the location of the bin drop off point, I got a very quick response confirming the new location. The bin was dropped off and picked up without incident. We were very happy and will order again when needed.

We have been gutting the basement walls to improve insulation and after removing existing drywall we discovered what seemed like potentially serious structural issues. I contacted KH Davis. Ken was extremely prompt in getting back. He was able to make an appointment with my husband very quickly. He did a very thorough inspection including a drawing to help us understand some of the structure. We were so relieved that the issues are either non issues or minor fixes. We feel a lot more confident about insulating and putting up new drywall knowing the structure us sound. As we are having replacement windows put in in a few weeks, it was so helpful to have the inspection done before that to give us time to make any repairs prior to the windows going in. Money well spent.

We had our roof replaced as well as all the eve troughs and fascia. We also had the leaf guard put on. The job took 4 days. 2 for the roof and 2 for the rest. We included a shed as well. The work was done very well. It looked like the eve trough work was a sub contractor. One issue just occurred. One piece of leaf guard has fallen off into the back yard. This was during the rain we were having this weekend. Hopefully it will be put back quickly.

We have a four zone sprinkler system in a yard that is 85 x 125 foot corner lot. I was shocked at our water bill. After this summer, one bill covering 90 days was 5x the typical bill. There were a lot of dry areas still and some that were really overwatered. Eric came by very quickly after I first contacted him and he evaluated the system. The system is about 30 years old with the old rotating sprinklers. He suggested replacing 15 heads with more efficient sprinkler heads, putting in a better control panel that allows more control over watering times and frequency and a rain sensor to help avoid watering after rain. Eric sent me a quote via e-mail after a few days. We negotiated a slightly better price on the heads and agreed to the job. He came out on Saturday morning and was complete in mid afternoon. He will be coming back to close the system and to redo one spot where we are putting in a patio next year and will need a different head. He was very professional and thorough. He even replaced a leaking tap that we did not know about. We were very happy overall and would recommend Eric and his company. I am looking forward to better water bills next summer and a more evenly watered yard.

We have been clients of this company for many years. We had a furnace and air conditioner intalled by a company that they later purchased. The intall was horrible and dangerous (we later found out). When I called later in the year for a repair on the brand new air conditioner, the technician from the new owner company asked me if I had a digital camera to take pictures of this installation. They came back and reintalled the entire thing. I was so pleased that I told everyone I knew about this company and how great they are. We had a contract with them for maintainance for 5 years and were good clients. Then we moved. Since we had a contract for one more Air conditioner service, I asked them to come to the new house. After looking at it, the technician told me that the freon was leaking and it really needed to be replaced. I said okay, let's get a quote on the whole system. In the mean time he installed a new thermostat we had asked for as part of the service call. $350+ for a talking thermostat. Since then we have had no end of trouble with this thermostat and finally asked for it to be replaced or repaired. They came out pretty quickly but it took two service calls and half a Saturday to get it replaced. Hopefully this one works. We did not end up going with One Hour for the Furnace and Air Conditioner although we did sign the contract after a 4 hour (yes that long) quote. We basically signed to get the guy out of our house finally. The quote was for over $10,000 and that was including all the refunds we would get after an energy audit (about $1500). I found another company on Home Stars - highly recommended. He had exactly the same equipment (Amana high efficiency) and his prices are right on his website. When I calculated I could not believe that it was $4000 less. We cancelled the contract and had a new quote that was exactly as per the website pricing and we would still get the energy refunds on top of that. Please, please, please get a few quotes. It may be a hassle but honestly. We have a very large house - 3100 sq feet and a fully finished basement, got the best equipment available and did not pay the kind of money some people who have given this company good reviews have paid. Do your homework and save your money.

Boris is a very knowledgeable person who did an excellent job explaining the equipment we needed and size that we needed. The job was done by two very efficient hard working men. They even continued to work even when we had a power outage for an hour in the neighbourhood. After another contract for the same equipment was quoted to us at $4,000 more, we got out of it the next day and went with Cozy World. The equipment is very efficient and works great. We are very pleased. This installation was done in summer 2010. On one of the hotest days in the summer 2011, the air conditioner stopped working. I looked outside and the wire to the unit made a large spark when touched. We did not have air conditioning for about 24 hours. Fred the intaller came in the evening and made a repair - it was minor but caused the unit to short out. There was no cost to me. I am pleased overall even though it was inconvenient and uncomfortable for 24 hours.

Shame on AlarmForce! My father lives in a tiny 900 sqft retirement cottage in a gated community. The complex has security guards on the premises and each unit comes with a monitored alarm system. Despite this, AlarmForce sold him on the idea of their 2-way system and personal care alarm systems and signed him up for 3-year contracts on both. My father is deaf so a 2-way system is useless to him, and he lives in Florida from November - May, so a personal "panic button" with a monthly fee would also be a waste. Never mind the fact that he cannot afford to pay for these things to begin with (The cost esimate above is based on $25/month + $35/Month x 12 months x 3 years). The AlarmForce equipment was installed adjecent to the existing alarm equipment just before my father went south for the winter. When he returned, he saw this new equipment and asked what it was and why it was there; he didn't seem to remember the sales call. We contacted AlarmForce customer support on his behalf to cancel the services with a full explanation but they were toatlly unsympathetic saying that he signed the contract and is responsible for paying for the duration. My father is 80, in frail health and like many his age, his memory is failing him. He most likely didn't understand what he was signing. It is beyond unacceptable that my father would be sold something he clearly doesn't need, and to be enrolled in two long term contracts. The evidence suggests to me that this company is only interested in signing people up at any cost. Note that I am not commenting on the AlarmForce equipment or the services they provide, I will leave that for others, however they are not for everyone, and clearly not for people like my father who is deaf and already had a monitored alarm system at the time. The sales person should have realized this and in all good conscience, not proceeded - instead he saw an easy sale. For their part, once the situation was fully explained to them, AlarmForce should have acknowledged their mistake and cancelled the agreements with a full refund of all monies paid to date. That would have been excellent customer service. Instead, they simply re-state that he has signed the contracts and will be held to them - that is not customer service, it is pure greed.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Acknowledge that your services are not for everyone, and do not allow your sales staff to take advantage of an obviously frail senior like you seem to have done in this case. If you care one iota about customer service, you should apologize for the treatment my father received and refund all the money you took ($70 / + tax month for the two systems - AlarmForce and AlarmCare - that he never needed from day one).
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Don't be fooled by their advertising. A 2-way alarm system is a gimmick most people don't need and will never use.

We purchased a new dishwasher since the old Maytag broke down and was not worth fixing. The newer dishwashers tend to have less room in the back at the bottom to accomodate plumbing or other things. This was the case with this dishwasher. We had some plumbing that needed to be adjusted from a previous reno that was poorly done. Ed and his assistant did an amazing job. It took about 1/2 an hour to carefully remove the old dishwasher. Then they realized that a wall plug would be needed for the new dishwasher. Ed called their sub contractor Thompson Electric to install the plug. This was done the next week when we were available again. The plug was installed quickly and efficiently. Ed came back later that day and after 2 hours of redoing plumbing he had the dishwasher installed and it looks great. Although they normally charge 1/2 the amount to install, due to the complications this was worth the extra $180! Thanks guys!

We have been using the services of Archdekin plumbing off and on for many years. The last job they did was to replace all four toilets in our new home. We purchased the toilets at Lowes and I called the office and set a convenient appointment time. Rob came right on time. He installed all the toilets quickly and efficiently even though he was alone. He go rid of all the old toilets and let me know if any were worth using, they normally donate materials and labour to Habitat for Humanity. They will be installing a dishwasher next week and they will be quoting on a major bathroom reno as well. They are fairly priced and Rob is a very hard worker. We had a kitchen tap that we thought we had to replace because the pull out did not work - had become disconnected somehow. Rob spent about 10 minutes on it and it's good as new. He did not charge me for this. Thanks Rob!

I have found that a local family owned business that have had a long history in the area are often the best option. I have used the large companies and I find they are often overpriced and impersonal.

We were moving a 4 bedroom house within Brampton. My husband and I had packed up most of the house. The men arrived at 11 am as promised with two trucks rather than the original 46 foot truck expected. This actually was a better option for us. There were 4 men - actually 3 men and one 16 year old but hard working. Oliver was excellent. Very organized and all moved with amazing speed. We actually had a second stop at a storage locker. With two trucks they were able to begin unloading the first truck while sending the second truck to empty the storage locker - very efficient. We had a situation where both my husband and I had to leave the new house for about an hour. I felt comfortable enough with the team to leave them on their own to continue unloading. Most things were placed in the correct rooms and the move went quite smoothly. Two small issues: The wardrobe boxes were pretty beaten up in general and my husband was taking them into the house for me rather than the moving men. I was asked to pick up a couple of things at the store and one of the men joined me in my car. What I did not realize was that he was only 16 years old and the other guys had sent him for cigarettes. I am not a smoker and I have never purchased cigarettes before. I had to purchase these as the young man was underage. This was very uncomfortable for me. Overall we were both very satisfied. The move took 9 hours plus one hour travel time at $150 per hour, 2 trucks and 4 men.

I was happy with their sevice and efficiency. They could provide better quality wardrobe boxes.

Shop around as some companies are severe gougers. Mark all boxes as thoroughly as possible to help unload and place in correct spots in new house.

Hi Ms. Shone: Thank you for the great review. I am glad that you were overall happy with our service. I am disapponted however that someone send the younger guy to buy cigarettes. I have this scheduled to discuss in our next group meeting and also the issue with the wardrobes. We have a number of new wardrobes in our warehouse that the crew should have taken for your move. I appreciate your feedback as this helps us with improvement. We hope that you are getting settled into your new home and enjoying it.
