I'm probably not the typical Floorwood customer, since I installed the hardwood myself - but my experience was great. Based on positive reviews and Floorwood's own recommendation I had decided I would go with Vintage brand flooring. I shopped around the usual stores, but Floorwood easily beat any price I could find for supply and delivery. Patricia and Robert were both fantastic to deal with, and super nice. I'd be happy to deal with them again in the future. Extra credit does got to Patricia, who put up with nearly 100 emails in the 1-year it took me to decide and purchase the wood. Yes, you read that right - 1 year of emails. There isn't a flooring store in the world who would have put up with me. In the end the floors look great, and I'd certainly recommend Floorwood to others.

Thanks Alan for the review, we really appreciate it :-) Glad I was able to answer all of your questions even though it took you almost a year to decide on the perfect floor ;-) But in the end you def. made the right choice!

I'm the President of a small townhouse condo complex. We had a total of 9 multi-flue chimneys (some had 2, some had 4 each) that needed total rebuilds. We received estimates from several brick & chimney companies, and ultimately selected Wilkens based on price, reviews here, and phone referrals. We couldn't be happier with the work. They did a high-quality job, started when they said they would, and kept to schedule. They were on site for nearly 3 weeks but you barely knew they were there. They kept their work and supplies clean and neat the entire time. They left no mess behind when they were done, and they were careful to make sure they caused no damage - they even moved my patio table away from the house just in case something dropped. I didn't get a chance to meet the crew myself, but many condo-owners have commented on how friendly and considerate they were. From a management perspective, they were great to work with. We could always get them on the phone, and they were flexible and co-operative at all times. In summary, from estimate through to final invoice, everything was fantastic. I wish I could hire them to do other work!

Hired DanMac to do a shower rough-in. Paid them straight-time at $85/hr. I thought the rate was competitive. I scheduled the plumber 2 days in advance, and he showed up on time. I thought the plumber worked at a reasonable pace, and finished the work in around the time I thought it should take. I hired them based on recommendations from a friend - they had performed a fixed-price job for his reno work. They quoted the work free of charge while he was planning it, and stuck to their price.

Invoicing on a time and materials basis is very often a cost affective way of having small jobs done.
Thank you for the input.

I had Waterworks come and quote on the rough-plumbing of a new shower. They provided a quote only and did not do any actual plumbing for me. You have to make sure they are the right type of plumber for your needs, though: Many big consumer/homeowner plumbing companies (all highly rated here at Homestars) provide premium quality and service. They can have someone at your house in an hour to do whatever you need. Premium service comes with a premium price. Waterworks is no different. Your other option is a more traditional plumbing contractor. They may have an emergency service, but for non-emergency work it will generally take them a few days to get someone to your house. They will be significantly cheaper than ANY of the big consumer companies (not just Waterworks!) I didn't know this when I called Waterworks. I declined to proceed with their quote, and instead hired a more traditional plumbing contractor. They soonest they could send someone was 3 days later, but I paid significantly less...they also didn't wear booties when they were walking through the house.

What could this company do to improve their services?
The service delivered to me was top notch.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Understand the market. If you want gold-star service, today, with complete peace of mind then you should consider Waterworks. If you are not in a rush, and just want some plumbing done, find a good, licenced, plumbing contractor that is willing to work at an hourly rate. In my case, Waterworks was at my house ready to work within an hour. Their price for my job was $1200-flat. Instead I hired a plumbing contractor who couldn't come by until 3 days later, charged me by the hour, and I paid $600.

I ended up choosing Automated Door Systems for two reasons: 1) Garaga Doors: I was convinced they were a good brand, and Automated Door Systems was one of their installers. 2) They would return my calls! I tried several installers. Most didn't want to come into downtown Toronto. One (highly rated here) made two appointments to come and estimate, and stood me up for both. Automated Door Systems was on time, provided a low-price estimate, and then delivered. In fact, my situation was challenged by a low garage ceiling height, and I didn't want to lower the garage door opening. The estimator explained on site what I'd need to do to make enough space, and what they could work around. Then, just to be sure, he dropped by to verify everything would work before putting in the final order. I'm quite happy with the results. I've had no troubles. I've recommended them to some neighbors who have also been happy.

I replaced 5 windows in my house. After a lot of research, and several quotes, I went with Consumer's Choice because a friend had used them, and the results were good. My windows turned out great. I think the product is very good. There were some hiccups with the install and measuring (they kept messing up my address) but it didn't bother me too much. They accidentally switched two windows (long story, they had the best intentions) but fixed their mistake. Some of the trim work was sloppy (nails blew out of the trim, and were visible). I didn't bother to call them back because they could be easily painted over. Chose Consumer's Choice because of the reviews here, especially those which were originally disappointed but the company returned to make it right.
