If you live in the Annex or downtown and can't or don't want to drive out to one of the big box stores, Home Hardware is centrally located and always fully staffed with knowledgeable and helpful people. The stores are franchises so it has that family-run feel, and I have always left with exactly what I needed in a minimal amount of time.
