I contacted CanAmerican Van Lines for a quote to move my belongings from Eastern Ontario to Northern Alberta. I was given a quote for 500lbs as I was only taking the essentials and wouldn't have much to move. For every lb over 500lbs it would cost $1. After everything was packed and ready to go I only had a box spring, mattress and 2 small wooden pieces for furniture to be moved. The rest consisted of approx 10 rubbermaid containers, 2 boxes, a couple garbage bags of clothes etc, 3 wall pictures, a vacuum, a sewing machine, and a printer. I thought that I may be over 500lbs by a bit so I was prepared to pay a bit more than the price quoted for the 500lbs. I was in shock when I received a call hours after my belongings were picked up by movers. I was told that my belongings had weighed 1250 lbs. I told the lady on the phone that I didn't think it would have even come close to weighing that much but she told me that she had the weigh ticket proving that was the weight. How am I to know that they didn't pick up someone else’s belongings on the way to the weigh station or that there wasn't anyone sitting in the truck as it was being weighed? So obviously I had no voice on that one so we proceeded with payment. This was when the lady on the phone had told me that I couldn't pay with my credit card because the movers had forgotten to get an imprint of my credit card when they came to pick up my belongings. Although, they did manage to get an imprint for the $500 deposit that was charged to my credit card after booking the move. The lady wanted me to send a money order, which was out of the question because now that the move was costing me nearly $1000 more than I had anticipated I was unable to have the amount come out of my banking account. She then asked me if I could come to their office so that they could get an imprint of my card. The office was located 3 hours away from me, I would have had to take a full day off of work and pay for the cost of gas there and back. After telling her that there was no way I would be driving there and that I was told on the phone when booking with the company that credit card was an accepted method of payment she told me that they would just take my credit card # and expiry date over the phone and would get an imprint when my belongings were being delivered to me on the other end. This is now the beginning of a whole other issue. When I called CanAmerican to set up my move, we decided on a date to have my belongings picked up in Ontario so that it would arrive in Alberta the same time as I would be arriving. This meant that my belongings would be picked up 2 weeks sooner than I would be leaving. Now that I am in Alberta I do not have my belongings and they are now not intended to arrive for another 2 weeks!!! If it was going to take 4 weeks to arrive in Alberta I would have just made the arrangement to have my belongings picked up 4 weeks before I would be arriving. I have spoken with CanAmerican since arriving and have been told that all moves of this distance take at least 4 weeks. The only condition I had when booking the move was that my belongings got to Alberta within a day or two of my arrival in Alberta. We discussed the dates on the phone and CanAmerican came up with the date that was 2 weeks prior to my arrival in Alberta. The lady I have been speaking with at CanAmerican has told me that she was looking into whether or not there was another truck they could put my belongings on so that they might arrive a bit sooner...no such luck. Throughout the past couple of days talking with CanAmerican about this issue I have not been given any apologies. I have only been argued with about the time this type of a move takes even though I was told otherwise by CanAmerican when booking the move. I asked what type of compensation I would be given for this whole situation and was told that there would be none. The lady told me that there are always unforeseen circumstances that may delay a truck from reaching its destination. Now I am confused. Does it always take this long to get to its destination or is it delayed? When I asked to speak to a manager the lady told me that she was the manager. After asking the manager for her name she simply said bye to me with no info as to when and how they will be contacting me about the delivery of my belongings. I don't even know if CanAmerican has a correct phone number for me as during this whole process that have not once contacted me.
