Heat pump not working. Freezing up. Needs freon apparently. Assumed freon leak. why doesn't service man, Alex (very personable) have canister to top up on a call like this? Unit will now be removed to be examined at shop. In the meantime we sweat.

We understand your frustration.
When it's matters of a refrigerant leak we are mandated by law to repair the leak vs just topping up the system. The leak could be coming from multiple locations and trying to pinpoint that within your suite could be time consuming and costly. Whereas, if the unit is removed, we are able to diagnose and repair in half the billable time. We always try to have a quick turnaround time.
