Replacing barn roof

We gave George who owns Airless Spray Painting a deposit to install a new roof on our barn. Due to unforseen financial circumstances we had to cancel the work a couple of days later ( the work had not started). We asked George to return our deposit. He agreed to return part of the deposit minus materials he said he had purchased (never provided receipts) he than gave us back even less as he said, as he stated he deserved to keep some more money for his inconvenience.
Would never deal with this person or company again.
