Bathroom Gut Job

in 2018, John was thorough and did a very good job on the bathroom, with everything as requested. Removed and replaced old drywall and insulation, installed infloor heating, tiles, plumbing, cabinets and linen closet, framing, and worked with my electrical contractor.

Small issue with timelines on follow up jobs. Very minor quality issues with the bathroom, e.g. the tub was not 100% level (a puddle stays in the tub after draining, which could have been shimmed to get it to drain fully) and that water gets trapped on outward sloping windowsills (he said he tried to slope it inwards to avoid this but didn't quite work). However, his price was truly excellent, and 3 years in, everything still is working well, and looking good.

Bathroom renovation

I typically don't like to write bad reviews, but as an Architect I have a professional responsibility to warn the public about the quality of service provided by this company.

I hired John in summer of 2019 to renovate two bathrooms and while the performed work was decent (timelines were not), 10 days ago the master ensuite has developed a leak (cause still not determined) and ruined our living room ceiling and probably few more things that are not visible yet.

Boyd Renovations offers 2 year warranty and as we are still within that period we contacted John multiple times via email, phone text messages and have been blatantly ignored.

We will have to hire someone to investigate and fix the issues and most likely it will mean ripping apart our less-then-2y-old master ensuite and a huge financial loss.

As my field of work is almost exclusively residential design, I will make sure to warn my clients and consultants about Boyd Renovations and their failure to fulfill their contractual obligations.

Bathroom Renovation

Boyd Renovations is reluctant to warranty and perform repairs for job he completed INCORRECTLY and not in accordance with manufacturers instructions as per contract.

Boyd Renovations installed my shower faucet incorrectly and is stating he does not have to fix the issue as I supplied the faucet (brand new) and did not use the one he wanted to provide. BOTH are MOEN faucets, the difference is cosmetic only.

I have a "stacking" issue with my shower faucet; When I turn the tub faucet on, water pours out of the shower head.

IAW the manufacturer specs the stacking distance between the tub spout and valve should be max 11' and min 6". Boyd Renovations installed this at 16.5".

I also have a text message from the owner stating he converted the pipe to 1/2" pex, whereas the specs state 1/2" copper or IPS pipe ONLY is to be used and 1/2" pex WILL cause stacking.

Approximately 1 week after project completion the hanging vanity that Boyd Renovations installed FELL OFF THE WALL. It was later discovered that he hung the vanity only using 4x 75lb anchors (no studs) and 2x 3" screws into a stud (that only went through the brace at the back of the vanity to help keep it square. The entire weight of the vanity was therefore resting on wall anchors and two screws that went through the centre of the brace. The anchors came right out of the wall and the brace board split exactly where the 2x screws were.

The vanity has since been re-hung, but a few corners of tiles are chipped, the vanity has a chip, and instead of just hanging, I have had to add legs. The Owner told me that he only fixed it because he was a nice guy, that he did not have to.

My video doorbell also saw the owner communicate to his helper once outside my front door that there was no (explicit) way it fell by itself, that we had to be shaving our legs on it or hanging off it.

IAW the manufactures instructions the vanity should have been secured into studs; this would demonstrate again where BR again did not adhere to the contract whereby he stated he would follow manufacturers' instructions.

The owner has refused to take responsibly for the mistakes he made, and instead blamed me. He is NOT a plumber, nor does he fully understand plumbing. He also does not understand that you cannot hand a vanity using wall anchors. He does not understand what he has done wrong, nor does he know how to fix it.

I would not recommend using this company if you want quality work done and in accordance with specifications. The owner of this company is NOT a plumber and does not adhere to his own contract.
