Glass Shower Enclosure

We hired Jason from Pane in the Glass Solutions to install a glass shower enclosure. The enclosure included two glass panels and a door. The estimate for the work was $1550.00. There was no contract, paper work or request for a deposit. We assumed that payment to Jason would proceed much like we had experience with every other contractor we had been working with at the time, once the job was completed, we would be handed an invoice, we would have the opportunity to inspect the quality of the work and we would write a cheque for the total of the invoice. That was not the case with Jason. Immediately upon completion of the glass installation he put his hand out and made a hand gesture indicating that he wanted money. There was no invoice offered. When we asked for an invoice and an opportunity to review his work before we handed him money, he became enraged. He began yelling, making threatening statements and stormed off. Within a few minutes he telephoned us and continued his verbal tirade. We were shocked by his behaviour. Even more upsetting to us was the fact that the glass had been installed wrong. One panel is cut so crooked that large amounts of silicone were used to fill the gap, the other panel leans and the top of the shower door hits the glass when it closes. We wondered if Jason wanted his money so quickly because he knew the job was not satisfactory. Two days later Jason telephoned and apologised for his outburst. We made him aware that we were not happy with quality of his work. He said that he was aware that there were some issues. He agreed to come back and correct the problems. We agreed to pay him a deposit; Jason was asking for $1000.00, we agreed to pay him half of the original estimate, $775.00. Jason came to the house, collected his money, we reviewed the problems and he left with the promise to return in a few days. He never came. Two weeks later we telephoned him, he began making excuses, lost his temper again and refused to come back to complete the work.
Second opinions from other installers have recommended that the entire structure be removed and installed correctly. We worked very hard and spent a lot of money on this renovation. The glass shower enclosure is installed on beautiful thresholds of granite. The damage to the granite upon which the glass had been installed is permanent.
We are extremely frustrated, disappointed and feel robbed.
