Backyard Fence

I'll start by stating that the quality of the fence is pretty good. It looks good and the gates are operational with no issues so far. It was built by one guy, which was pretty impressive.

The reason for the low rating is for the state our backyard and parking pad was left in. I understand that some mess is expected. There is even a clause in the quote that states that. However, I believe the mess left behind was pretty unreasonable. As shown in the photos, the ground plugs from the post holes were left behind our shed, along with a lot of dirt. For whatever reason, the dirt, clay, and large rocks that were dug up was either spread out across our backyard, lined up along the side of our parking pad, piled up along the side of my neighbor's house, or left in a large pile behind our shed. My wife even witnessed the builder spreading out the debris on our parking pad for whatever reason. As you can imagine, it's a mess back there whenever it rains or snows. Backyard is pretty much unusable if it's wet out. I mentioned this when the final invoice was sent to me, but never heard back. I mentioned it again a few weeks ago when I reached out to for a review. Never heard back.

Hi Adam,

Mark here - General Manager at First Class Fencing. Im glad we got in touch today to discuss the dirt. It's nice to hear you were extremely happy with the project and fence and I'll be sure to let the team know of your kind remarks.

Additionally glad we could sort out the dirt concern. As you know we do leave the dirt on site but your job was unique in the volume and should have I known sooner, we would have arranged to get this cleaned up for you. That's why reaching out and reviews are so important.

I thank you for revising your review to a 10 star once completed.

I'll be in touch by end of next week when the snow melts to get this handled for you.

Have a great long weekend!

Fencing in a Parking Pad & Replacing Gate/Fence in front of House

My wife found First Class Fencing after a previous company we dealt with was slow in responding to us. FCF was very quick in responding to our requests with Mark and Andrew showing up that very day we called and analyzing our needs with a quote that was hundreds of dollars below a competitor. The work done was quick and efficient while paying attention to detail, while no corners were cut to save time or energy. A crew was sent and were very helpful moving a very heavy dog house for us amongst other things. As an older couple it was much appreciated. We wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend them. Thanks again for a job well done.

Small gate

The initial meeting about our huge, old gate that was causing problems between our home and the neighbours home was helpful. The meeting with FCF staff was positive , professional, prompt and promising. Together we identified that the current oversized gate was pulling on the fencing stuctures and the neighbours house too. In the end, FCF convinced our neighbour to join forces and get their gate redone at the same time to be efficient with cost of resources. We read the very long and thorough contract about how other companies bait and switch (meaning get the deposit and don't come back for the job). They also promised that they would be not subcontracting that it would be their own staff working on the gate.

We booked them with the understanding that since this was a small job, we would be squeezed in between jobs but definitely before the winter snow began. We were fine with that. We gave our deposit and it was a long time before we were booked. The office staff did not keep us informed about when they would be slotting us in. Eventually our job began the week the snow started.

- subcontractor showed up bragging that this was his first day with FCF (he ended up sick and FCF staff came back to finish the job)
- the photo I signed off on did not show the boat shaped decorative wood at the top very clearly I wanted , so instead I have small , rough, sloppy 2x4s along the top which I would have rather not had at all
- the new gate still pulls on the fence structure and puts stress on the black gate opener
- metal hardware left on ground from old gate (see photo)
- level issues throughout the process of the job, not only horizontal but vertical as well. The FCF staff did some and redo the whole project and it remains to have levelling issues.

Although the staff tried to remedy the mistakes with the subcontractors initial installation, when I look at the gate I am not happy but that is partly my fault for not providing a zoom photo of the 'boat' shape decorative topping 2x4 pieces.

Overall, I was frustrated with the process of 'we are this' and then we got different types services with sloppy finish (they dragged the old fence post with metal on it across the lawn and city walk). There are lots of office staff that work there, but the project coordinator / scheduler is hard to reach.

Positives
- joint project with neighbour worked out, thanks for suggesting that
- professional staff with good intentions
- project done before winter

Company Response

Hey Heather,

Thank you for providing your feedback and photos. In full transparency, I looked at the photos first thinking "wow, fence looks great" but then I read your review to find you were not completely satisfied, which comes at a surprise. I tried to give you a call to discuss, however, I didn't receive an answer so I'd like to respond via Homestars in hopes that we can get this resolved. Our customers and our quality of work are very important to us.

FCF uses both contractors and in-house staff/crews, nothing was stated that we do not have contractors. Good help is hard to find so both employees and contractors are welcome full-time staff. The contractors we use, including (Brett) the one who initially started your job, have done many projects for FCF, dating back to 2021 and has always proven to be a talented builder. He's been working with the owner for over a decade so his comment on first day is very weird. I do recognize that things did not go well with him on this project and I sincerely apologize for that, he did fall sick and unfortunately ended up in the hospital. Even in that very busy time before winter hit, we promptly sent our Project Manager who rectified concerns. I also personally came out as well to help him complete the project to avoid any delays. In regards to your comment on "metal hardware", one of the base-plates from the previous structure was unable to be removed. The bolts were stripped and although we tried vigorously we ultimately could only get one of them removed. (Per your picture) The post that our project manager had to drag away weighed approximately 250lbs due to all the concrete attached, so he did get it out of there but yes, it was difficult to lift on his own all the way to the truck in order to dispose of it.

I do also recognize that our operations department didn't keep in contact with you the way you would have liked. We had this concern come up a few times in 2023 and we have moved on from this staff member where Mark (part owner) has moved into this role and his attention to communication is impeccable but that was not present during your project. That said, I did my best to compensate for this through my communication and getting you answers throughout the process as you needed. As your sales rep, I am your champion to see you through this project and I felt I did a really good job in that respect.

We went over the design in-depth and had a photo on file, which was marked up with materials and you signed off on as far as the design of the brace goes (in order to re-direct your downspout). There was no communication of a boat shape and that detail wasn't shown in the photo provided to us to use as guidance for building the brace. As you addressed in your response.

I also noticed some green spots in some of the photos you posted, this is standard with pressure-treated wood (it's the sap reacting to the wood treatment) and I want to re-assure you that this will fade over time.(If Homestars would allow me to post a photo, I have pictures to give this credibility and confidence)

We did a walk-through of the project with your husband after it was completed, before we left site, and he seemed very happy with everything so I this truly comes as a surprise that you were dissatisfied with the final project. I would love the opportunity to speak with you so we can address your concerns and make the necessary corrections.

Please reach out to me when you have the opportunity and we will be more than happy to work together on this so we can make sure you're satisfied with the work that has been done.

Kind Regards,

Lindsay Pickrem

Fence

Very satisfied with the job and quality of the fence! The fence is fastened together with screws and not nails. The work was completed with in the week so my yard was not open for very long. A plus for me. The only reason I gave 4 stars for satisfaction was due to communications. I had to call twice on occasion to get a reply on some of the questions I had. Maybe very busy. That said, I would still use them again!

Terrible experience

We had a 20 foot backyard fence that we needed redone last July 2023. It was just finished January 2024.

Issues:
1) no communication from the project lead
2) built crooked. Panels scratched. Had to be redone.
3) gate latch put on incorrectly. Had to be redone. Wasnt great at this point but we just wanted the experience done.
4). They invoiced us for the final invoice before the project was done.

We wouldnt never recommend this company. 20 feet of fence takes 6 months. Terrible experience. They discounted us in the end but it still wasnt worth dealing with them.

$4,000.00

Hi Lillian,

Mark here (the Project Manager/Owner on site) I always appreciate feedback but I feel there is a lot of context missing in your review. To clarify, this job could have gone smoother, that we agree.

That said, there was communication with your husband and action plans on the base plated post that was slightly out of plumb due to the concrete location.

The latch was in good shape, installed correctly and was never changed. Also, I didn't rectify any scratches panels. I'm confused on these parts of the fence.

Invoicing early was our mistake, I received a photo when the gate was hung from the crew and gave approval to Jacquline to invoice. It was a busy month but I should have seen the post in person.

But in consideration to the slight hiccups, we provided a 14% discount ($500) which we would have hoped was in good faith to make up for the delay on swapping out those parts and it would have been nice to have that included in the review and everything we did do to rectify.

We do appreciate the business and I'd love to chat through this with you or James if possible.

Thanks!

Fencing project (partial)

Dear First Class Fencing,

I cannot express how satisfied my husband and I are with our new chain-link fence! We bought our house in Airdrie in 2019 and the older wood fence on the west side was not the greatest and I always felt embarrassed by it due to its condition. We had also requested a new gate on the east side which was also replaced. They kept the wood posts as they didn't need to be replaced, they were still very sturdy and was determined not necessary to replace. I appreciate the honesty as they could have very well have said to replace more.

Now with our new gates and black chain-link fence with privacy slats, I feel secure and so very proud! The crew kept the work area very clean, they were very professional and their workmanship is top notch!

Thank you First Class Fencing team, you made things from start to finish a wonderful experience!
