John Niles and Calgary Custom Building (aka 6weekbasements or 1week kitchens) is the absolute worst contractor experience we have ever had. He will rush your job to 60% and get the framing, electrical rough in, plumbing rough in done in 3 weeks and demand 60% of the overall basement development contract cost payments. After that point he came up with all kinds of excuses to delay our project. Yesterday was officially 126 days since our contract was signed and since the 3 week mark the last 106 days he has completed 80% of the drywall and 80% of the trim work. I was foolish enough to pay him 100% of the drywall. When he demanded payment for the trim I refused and gave him conditions (finish drywall and trim, pay his own sub trades as he have been avoiding his sub contractors' calls and emails and start bringing in the finishing materials). We have paid him 70% of the overall development cost which includes 70% of our cabinets, quartz countertop, vanity, sinks, faucets, lighting, wiring shelves, bathroom fixtures, glass tub backing and glass). When we told him about the conditions he threatened to put a lien on our house and sue me for not paying him the next 10% to make 80%.
Wow, this was an eye opener for us. How dare he ask us for the next payment when he does not hold his end of the bargain to the contract he created.
BTW, John Niles thinks he was doing a good job with my basement's project management and he says he is doing the best he can. I am just completely floored.
Looking at his reviews from his other clients and a F rating on BBB there seems to be a gap.
