Kitchen and bathroom backsplash, calgary ab

Brothers too "many excuses" contracting.

When we first met Dave he won us over with this smooth talking charm. Things took a turn for the worse once the project started. Then it was nothing but excuses and delays.

Currently we are sitting with an unfinished bathroom backsplash and LED under lighting that does not match. Dave has since refused to complete or fix the project.

Dave and his team left behind garbage on the first day of work, left our home unlocked and even scratched our floor initially refusing to take ownership for the damage before begrudgingly fixing with a stain crayon.

After more delays, Dave took it upon himself to enter our home without permission. This caused our home alarm to trigger. Later, he tried to convince us the LED mismatch had to due with the colour of our pantry door. We simply looked under the cabinet and could see his team had combined two leftover scrap strips together. Again only after following up repeatedly did he finally take ownership.

The final straw? We found broken tiles and grout in our sink drain due more careless work occurring when they removed our old backslash.

In Dave's professional opinion our house has a hex on it and a $100k project is his priority not finishing the job he promised us. Clearly smaller jobs are not worth his time.

Lack of respect, extremely unprofessional, dishonest, and careless craftsmanship sum up brothers too contracting.

Company Response

Everything here is absolutely true..yes we did scratch the floor and repaired it same day...the under cab led lights are totally our fault as the 2 strips we had left didn't match exactly but subsequently we have provided 2 new strips..as for entering without permission, I had a key and was driving by and thought I would pop in to measure for new lights and of course the alarm was on..I paid false alarm fee...now here's the real reason this job went south..everything was fine until Zach found some small tile pieces in the drain where we were replacing backsplash in bathroom..it was at this point on Father's Day that he decided to call my machine and leave a profanity-laced tirade.. I'm sorry but professionalism goes both ways and that was the straw that broke the camel's back.. it was at this point I informed him we would no longer be coming on site and that he could finish grouting the backsplash and have an electrician replace the Free Lights I gave him... it has nothing to do with the size of the job it has to do with the quality of the client

Home renovation

I hired Dave Jackson of Brothers too Contracting for a renovation project which was supposed to be completed in 3 weeks. Over the course of 2 months he kept changing his word and failed to follow the contract.
He asked for more money every single time threatening to abandon if I did not pay him what he wanted which I did. For instance I had paid 20% upfront after he agreed I could hold back the same percentage till after completion. I had this in writing but he became verbally abusive saying he wanted more money or would walk away! I DID pay him what he wanted but still Walking away and abandoning the project is what he did 3 months ago (to make matters worse he left a huge unsightly pile of garbage on my front lawn)-- now after having various contractors look at his work and reluctantly quoting us for redoing some of the work done improperly, I am realizing there are many problems with the quality of what's been done and in addition to the remaining work, a lot needs to be redone.
There are many issues but to mention a few: simple things like floor registers do not fit.. the holes are not cut the right size! All closet doors are installed at an angle are rubbing against the frames. I've been told his funny looking under-the-sink plumbing will clog up in no time and be more costly to fix. He has vented the dryer and the hood fan together and every time we run the dryer the upper cabinets and the fan get very steamy! Also dryer lint is flammable which makes this is a serious safety/insurance issue as well.

His hardwood installation was really the worst of its kind with large gaps and hammer marks everywhere. He can blame it on the wood quality all he wants but I'm so glad I did not put more money into it as the poor installation would've damaged it in the end.

The basement was renovated taking the prospective rental income into account. It was meant to be a mortgage helper but we have not been able to rent it as there are still issues and the upper level is not yet functional either.

I understand projects run late if there are unexpected problems arising and I would not have mentioned it if he had shown some concern. All he said is that the countertops were late but I was forced to postpone measurements twice as it took him a whole month to install the cabinets and you can't order the countertops without the cabinets!

He seemed like a friendly guy and kept saying we should trust him as he'd take care of everything. I let him into my home and treated him like a friend with nothing but respect even after his unjustifiable outbursts. He had the key to my house and we had no privacy as he and his workers could walk in anytime, there were many days he or his workers did not show up at all and I never questioned him or treated him the way he treated us. I paid him what he wanted whenever he wanted it. In return he was explosive, verbally abusive, and showed no respect to us nor his written contract.

To say that I am upset by the rudeness and unprofessional attitude of the person running this business would be an understatement. I am currently in a jam as many contractors are reluctant to undertake this project and I don't have that kind of money to pay for something twice! He is refusing to complete the work or refund the amount required to complete the project.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Follow the terms of the contract professionally. COMPLETE the work. Treat paying clients like he himself expects to be treated. Do not be greedy and blowup over money matters when a client is paying more than had been agreed upon, there's just so much abuse and stress a person can take.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Be very careful. Watch for early signs!
