plumbing, painting, tiling

Sam - did work for us over 4 full days. He is a hard worker. he listens and does a good job. I believe he is a plumber by trade.

He did electrical work, plumbing work, painting (touching up the entire house) and tiling work for us.

I highly recommend him.

Plumbing installation

SUMMARY: Excellent work, but lack of preparedness caused extra cost and aggravation.

THE SITUATION: I bought a thermostatic control for the shower/bathtub to replace the pressure-sensitive control. I opened the box and read the instructions and wow, this was a lot more complicated than just swapping one pressure control for another. I didn't understand the instructions and couldn't figure out what (if any) other parts I'd need to make it work. I needed professional help.

WHAT I DID: I contacted a few highly-rated people through Homestars, explaining what I needed done and giving the model numbers of what I had (the specs and instructions are easy to find online), and asked if they could install this for me. Sam quickly replied that he could and his estimated labour cost seemed reasonable (neither too high nor suspiciously low). And a handyman who was also a licenced plumber seemed like the ideal person for the job.

HOW IT WENT: Sam arrived at the appointed time, was friendly and professional and went to work. He spent much of the day working on the install and commented that it was more complicated than he expected. When he was done installing everything, we turned the water back on and, to make a long story short, it didn't work and he couldn't make it work.

After talking on the phone to the vendor of the product, he realized that we needed more parts to make this work. He would have to get these parts and return another day. This was a disappointment because the very reason I hired him was to get the efficiency of having a pro show up with all the necessary knowledge and equipment, rather than having someone figure it out as he went along. This was a month and a half after Sam received the information he needed to find out what parts were necessary (and he did contact me in advance to ask some questions to determine whether some other parts were going to be needed). There was nothing he learned this day that he couldn’t have found out before.

It turned out he couldn't get the parts until Monday (this was on Thursday), so we went without a functioning shower or tub faucet until then.

Sam spent the day Monday re-doing the job and demonstrated expert plumbing knowledge and skill in his solution. If he had arrived with everything necessary to do the job on Thursday, I would be giving him a 10 rating. The labour cost ended up being more than twice the original estimate (after a reduction -- I think he probably spent about four times as much time on the job than he expected).

So here's the issue: Part of being an expert is knowing the limits of your knowledge -- recognizing when you don't know something. Sometimes in home repair, things come up that you couldn't have known about. In this case, Sam could have known but didn't realize that he needed to. When I first asked whether he could install this specific item (giving the information necessary to quickly find the instructions and technical descriptions), I expected that he'd look it up if it wasn't a job he wasn't already familiar with. He just made assumptions without spending the two minutes necessary to verify them.

It seems to be the same for a number of other lower-rated reviews Sam's received. If he'd have recognized what he doesn't already know, he could have saved us all a frustrating experience.

I think that Sam would do an excellent job at home repair tasks where he has the necessary skills and knowledge. But if he can’t be relied on to know whether the task you need done falls into that category, then it’s hard to recommend him.

Helping put together my Nursery

Sam was great. He came to my house to help me put together all the furniture for my nursery. He was pleasant, courteous and knowledgeable. I've never seen anyone put together a dresser so efficiently! He also helped me with other problems I had and gave me advice related to plumbing and my air vents that we found out was not hooked up. He is a plumber by trade, as I understand, so his expertise on the leak that I had was invaluable and something that I needed to get done. Thanks Sam. Great job!

Installation of drapery rod (living room);installation of quarter-round throughout living room; adjustment of kitchen cabinet and fuse-box door; installing towel rack on bathroom door.

Sam is very friendly and courteous. He says he will begin at 8:00am on Saturday morning and he is prompt to the second. I am very satisfied with his work and capability. I have ongoing odds jobs that need to be done and Sam will be returning to do them. I will have him back to install quarter-round in my bedroom and kitchen and for some repairs on my balcony.

Varying odd end jobs around the house

I'll begin by saying that Sam is as pleasant a person you will ever meet. That being said, I had contacted him to help in addressing a few issues that I was having at my place. These ranged from a couple of floor/stair creaks to significant cracking on my exterior concrete stairs. Sam was punctual and again, very courteous, but his knowledge in certain areas is very limited. Pictures of the cracking were sent his way a week prior to our scheduled appointment and as such, it was assumed that he knew what the job itself entailed to ensure the end result would look as similar as possible to the remainder of the staircase. However, the end result was far from it. The floor creak wasn't addressed at all as he didn't feel comfortable in doing so and the solution to the stair creak was essentially drilling a bunch of screws into the stairs, from the top, into the carpet, damaging it in the process. When it still didn't fix the creaking, I asked him as politely as possible to remove the 10+ screws as I'd arrange to have the stairs fixed via other means. I hate to leave such a negative review because he is really a good guy, but I can't say I was really satisfied at all by this experience.

Fix loose tiles and cracking grout

My main floor tiles were creaking and the grout was cracking is 3 different places. I contacted Sam to fix my flooring. Sam came in assessed the problem and gave me some options on how to repair the flooring. He gave me a list of items to purchase before actually working on the project. Once the items were procured, Sam came back and we worked together on securing the floor from the basement; he then removed the loose tile without breaking them (a bit of a delicate work as my flooring has inserts), reinstalled the tiles and applied the new grout. I was very happy with his work, as he managed to save most of the tiles (8 out of the total of 10 tiles that needed to be reset with stronger adhesive) - project was completed in September of 2012.
