Fix leak in toilet

I don't usually take the time to review but this time I feel that it's necessary to warn others about this guy so that others don't get ripped off like I did. I found this company/guy on Kijiji. I spoke with Alex on the phone and he quoted me his rate, $135 for the first hour and $85 for each hour after that. We had a minor leak in our toilet and we needed to replace a shut off valve in the kitchen so I thought with a bit of luck maybe the work could get done in one hour. He said the materials would be extra and I was a bit wary so I asked, the materials cost shouldn't be significant, right? And he said no. I figured how much could a few plumbing parts cost anyway, there is probably only a seal to replace. To make a long story short, our final bill ended up costing 580 dollars. This was beyond what I could have imagined this repair could cost. He charged for 3 hours even though he only stayed for 2.5 hours and charged $200 for materials (even though a very highly rated brand new toilet is $109 at Home Depot). My husband felt pressured to pay right away, he even made him go to the bank machine to withdraw more cash. I wasn't home and when I found out about it I called Alex right away and asked for a proper receipt which itemized all the materials. He said he would send it to me the next day. I called several times and finally a week later I get a laundry list of all the plumbing materials you can think of without any amounts totalling to the cost of materials he charged us. This was totally useless since I couldn't compare what he charged me to what those items actually cost at Home Depot. If you ever have a leaky toilet save yourself a lot of stress and money, replace the entire toilet and avoid a plumber if possible. I'm sure any handyman can replace a toilet.

Approximate cost of services:
$550.00

Company Response

From the owner: We do our best to keep costs down as we understand unexpected repairs can be difficult for homeowners. All our pricing is upfront so you know what estimated costs for the job are going to be before any work starts. A toilet replacement was recommended at the time of repair. Unfortunately, toilet repairs vary for the amount of time and material spent on each job.
