New metal roof

When researching metal roofing companies I liked what I saw when I visited the website of Jay Carter Roofing. A steel roof is a very important decision so I felt it necessary to get three estimates. I went through the online portal for Jay Carter and was called back the very next day and an appointment was made for somebody to come out and measure our roof and discuss options with me. Larry explained the benefits of a steel roof and did a full inspection of my current asphalt shingle roof while he was measuring. It turns out a wild animal had removed one of my plastic vents and there was an open hole in my roof. Larry covered that area with a small tarp once he finished measuring. I was provided with a quote the very next day and that quote came with all the colour options and what the material looks like once installed. The other 2 companies I called did provide quotes but didn't come out to measure or inspect, I was just emailed quotes. It was an easy decision to choose Jay Carter Roofing and I'm so happy with my new standing seam metal roof. I'm a widow and the crew that installed the roof was very respectful and did a great job protecting my gardens and deck. Once the job was finished Larry returned to do a final inspection and he even shared before and after drone pictures with me. If you want a forever metal roof you should call Jay Carter Roofing.

Unacceptable

Jay Carter Roofing installed a new steel roof in our house.
They claimed that it will be so sealed that mice will never get in, but we have mice or rats getting into the roof eating the foam insulation they put under the steel roof. We constantly hear them. We climbed up the side of the roof, and the soffit has loose parts that you can just push over, which are not even screwed in.
They also installed an eavesdrop with the downspouts facing right into the foundation, causing the basement to flood, after we told them where to put the downspouts..
When we finally threatened them with a bad review, they came and put the downspouts in the right place, but only one person came to remove it and slope it the opposite way. With one person only, he couldn't get it to slope properly, and now it bows down in the middle, thus having ot full of water all the time and inviting mosquitoes and rodents that always find their way in since, as I mentioned, the roof is not properly sealed. We are very stressed about this situation and would not recommend this company to anyone. In fact, I have been telling people to stay away from Jay Carter Roofing. This is unacceptable
We tried calling for 3 months until someone finally got back to us the time we had the problem with the eavesthrough. .Very unprofessional to expect your clients to climb up a new roof and start looking for entry points for rodents

Company Response

Santiago ,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We would like to express our apologies for any distress you have experienced following the metal roof installation at your property.

We wish to clarify that a metal roof installation's primary purpose is to offer durability, energy efficiency, and protection against various elements. However, preventing rodent infestations is unfortunately not within the capabilities of any roofing system. Rodent issues are typically linked to a variety of factors that are beyond the control of roofing work, and resolving such problems often requires professional pest control services.

We have noted your mention of using negative reviews as leverage during our interactions. It is indeed unfortunate that discussions about service concerns have escalated to this point, where threats of negative reviews are used to gain concessions. Our goal has always been to maintain open, respectful, and constructive dialogue with all our clients, addressing concerns and misunderstandings collaboratively and professionally.

It is crucial to acknowledge the importance of presenting the entire story instead of selectively sharing parts that might tarnish the company's reputation unfairly. The flood you experienced was not a consequence of the work we performed on the downpipe. We replaced the downpipe precisely where the original one was located, and it is crucial to understand that the unfortunate flooding was attributable to external factors such as snow, freezing temperatures, and the property's slope. The home was under full renovation at the time and was in a state of dis repair. It is essential to note that this area has a history of flooding under similar conditions, which is entirely out of our control.

To further underline our commitment to customer satisfaction and address your concerns, we have taken additional steps to mitigate future problems proactively. As a courtesy, and despite the floods not being a result of our initial work, we returned to your property to reposition and extend the downpipe and trough to a new location that would potentially minimize the risk of flooding. We undertook this extra work under the explicit threat of negative reviews and without any obligation to do so, purely in an attempt to provide an exemplary level of service and customer satisfaction. It is imperative for future discourse to reflect the whole scenario accurately and fairly for it to be constructive and beneficial for all parties involved.
The use of threats, including the threat of negative reviews, hinders the possibility of an amicable and cooperative resolution to service-related concerns. These actions create a hostile environment that is not conducive to problem-solving, making it increasingly difficult for both parties to communicate effectively and work together towards a resolution.

Given these circumstances, we regret to inform you that we cannot continue engaging in a professional relationship characterized by threats and accusations. It is with disappointment that we conclude it may be in the best interest of both parties to part ways at this juncture. We sincerely hope you find the appropriate solutions to the issues you are encountering with your home and wish you all the best moving forward.

For any additional concerns or inquiries, you are always welcome to reach out. With 22 years of experience in installing metal roofs on homes, we stand by the quality and durability of our work. While we acknowledge that it’s impossible to please everyone, we take pride in having successfully met the expectations of over 5,000 homeowners, and we are committed to addressing and resolving any legitimate concerns you may have. We endeavor to provide assistance as needed and hope that, moving forward, you have a secure and satisfying experience with your home. Your peace of mind and satisfaction with our work remain our top priorities

Angi we are sincerely sorry to hear about your negative experience. We do honestly try to provide all our clients fast and reliable service. Unfortunately it seams we were un able to get to you within your expected timeline. This year has presented huge challenges to all contractors. We do understand the frustration with long delays and hope you understand we are a small family business with limited resources. Please take care

Roof repair

Had a small repair to a roof that Jay Carter installed 9 years ago. The repair was under warranty, as was handled in a most timely manner. Jay Carter has installed this roof, as well as our solar panels and has repaired our aluminum facings. He has also worked on another house we own to repair extensive damage left from improperly removing a satellite dish. We have a trusting relationship that has spanned 9 years, two properties and several projects. Would recommend highly.

Ribbed Steel Roof

Call them, you will not have regrets.
On time, on budget. Work is square which is an accomplishment considering the building is almost 80 years old. Total sq ft 1715.

We met with multiple companies, targeting those with overall good reviews in the area (central Ontario). One didn't show up. One wanted to work a cash deal and didn't quote formally, only verbal. One was more interested in his kids hockey practice and said they send a quote the following week. Nothing ever received. Jay Carter Roofing was the fourth company contacted, the first to show up at the door, even in covid times.

Quotation was comprehensive, fully complete and professional. Rob could answer almost every question we had. Paying particular attention to the questions of safety. We have a hydro stack and a steep pitch. Either possibly a recipe for an accident. Being 30km from the closest emergency help, safety must be considered. Rob explained all the choices available. Stated timing would be about 4-6 weeks. Confirmed company safety protocols (working at heights training in compliance), WSIB coverage etc. We received the formal quote the next business day (met on the weekend) 9/14/2020.

Remember, we were speaking with other companies. This is a big cost. It's really important to do your homework, research the companies. DIG. Each company was given the same opportunity to visit, measure, answer and ask questions and quote.

A few days after receiving quote from Jay Carter Roofing, we asked for references. These were received promptly. We didn't want references from multi-million dollar estates on Lake Simcoe, just regular homes.

We went to each reference address, knocked on doors, looked at the work from all angles (neighbours must have thought we were casing the homes) haha...

One reference from Beaverton took the time, on an early Sunday morning, to talk for the better part of an hour. He had a century+ home and all the hiccups that come with an old home.

The materials used on his home were exactly what we wanted to choose.

That home owner's personal feedback pushed Jay Carter Roofing ahead of everyone else. He shared his entire experience, costing, timelines etc.

The references left us with a real sense of confidence in this roofing contractor. Not a huge company but employs their own people rather than sub-contractors.

Wasn't finished vetting the company(ies). They will be in and on our home. There is liability and potential risk. Call me paranoid but Murphy's law often prevails. I dug through the deadbeat contractors listings with the Ontario government and municipal records, searched through historical litigation records, checked BBB, checked credit reports. Found ZERO against Jay Carter Roofing. Jay Carter's record was clean.

Called Rob back a day later to let him know we wanted to work with Jay Carter Roofing and asked him to have the materials ordered. We could firm up any other details along the way. We wanted to get on the schedule.

Sometimes communications during these odd covid times can be fragmented. We had some difficulty connecting with the office. Likely staff were only in the office intermittently or working remote. I do not know their business model.

The communication issue was simply US asking what do you need? Power? Access to the house for bathroom use or warming up? This was expected to be done end of October or early November. Wanted to provide the crew whatever support they needed.

Pulled in the driveway 10/23 to find strapping had been started and materials delivered. Rain was expected so next steps would have to wait. Mike explained that he'd do the best he could to make it look good. This is an old stick built building. Nothing is square or level. Yes, safety equipment was being used.

Fast forward a few days and pulling in the driveway we find that the roof is almost completely finished. A few details left. Mike clearly explained how he managed to install the boot around the live hydro stack and the woodstove chimney. Tasha and Mike made a great team. The work looks great. Makes the siding look like a shanty haha. That's a project for another time.

Work site was so tidy. Even before cleanup was done, I only found one screw on the deck.

A couple days later, pulling into the driveway we found Frenchy there to do cleanup. Even better than that, he took the cheque for us back to the office.

Every person we dealt with at Jay Carter Roofing was friendly, honest to a fault and has an "I care" attitude. They treated our home and property with care and respect.

Not sure what more to say other than the warranty will outlive us.

Call or meet with them and do your own homework. Cost $14185 including taxes. On time. On budget. Integrity and good workmanship. Ideal.
