Packing and moving to basement

Be very careful with Quality Packing and Moving. They will make claims that they end up not being able to honour, and if you are not on site controlling them constantly, they will take advantage of you and charge you for extras you don't need or pack what was not agreed, or will refuse to pack what was agreed, all rather arbitrarily depending on what crew they have and what material they brought with them. It seems they especially look for "extras" if they think you can afford it because you live in a "nice" neighbourhood.

We hired this company in early Fall of 2012 to move furniture from our above ground floors to our basement in order to get the house ready for renting. They claimed that items would be wrapped and packed as per international moving requirements. In reality, no furniture was wrapped and the packing was shoddy and borderline incompetent.

I was out of the country at the time of the move and it was only my wife there to supervise these people and they immediately proceeded to take advantage of her. First, they showed up at the wrong house and rudely phoned to complain that no one was opening the door. When they finally found our house, 30 minutes later, there was no apology and almost immediately my wife was was told that the job would be several $100s more than they had estimated, even though nothing had changed in the house between the time of their estimate and the day they arrived for the job.

They then didn't stick to the list of items we agreed to have packed and move; for example they started packing things from the garage even though it was explicitly not on the move list. Then they weren't able to move items they claimed would be movable down the stairwell. They took extended smoke breaks that even my neighbours noticed; and, worst of all, they packed things very poorly. They used the cheapest tape (that thin brown kind that doesn't hold), re-used boxes from previous moves that still had info on them from those moves -- so I had boxes that said both "Tools and "Linen" on them -- and charged me for extra packing material that was not needed, while they didn't even use a stack of 10 brand new boxes that I had in the basement, instead moving these into the storage area unused as if they were part of the move!

Really, just not a sharp group and very difficult to deal with, taking full advantage of being paid hourly to pad the bill. They ended up charging me 40% more for a job that turned out to be done only to 80% of what we agreed. Eventually we agreed on a fee of 60% of their original estimate, but it took 6 months to get there.

Just generally a very unpleasant experience with an exceedingly belligerent and unprofessional group of movers.

If you want to give them a try, make sure you've talked to other movers beforehand. Then ask these people for at least 3 references (it's more difficult to fake 3 references). Chances are they'll never call you back.

Approximate cost of services:
$1,500.00
