Creation and installation of 2 flights of oak stairs

Simply put, Alpa Stairs is a disaster. We dealt with Robert who is a nice guy, but he didn’t seem to understand how measurements worked as he needed to come to our home twice to measure the stairs. Given that, we were extremely surprised that they were both too wide to fit when delivered! We also had to wait a few weeks longer than the time they said they’d be delivered, which is a bit of a pain when you need to climb a ladder to do laundry. The stairs were installed on a funny angle (our toes were higher than our heels when standing on a step), they scratched part of the newly installed floors (which had to be replaced by our contractor), they left massive scratches and serious gouges in the newly painted walls by trying to bang the overly wide stairs into place (now needing a new plaster and paint job). The one set that they did manage to bang in is so tight than it squeaks when you walk on it. We're going to have our contractor cut out the wall on the opposing side to help fix that problem. Also, the stringer stuck out from the wall (into the middle of the room) by about 6 inches. I had originally asked them to round it to the wall but Robert told me that it wouldn’t stick out more than an inch, so it was unnecessary. They took back the one set of stairs to make the sides slimmer. Had we checked the second set before they left (they said they went in fine), we would have asked them to take that set as well. To add to that, they didn’t show up the day they said they would so the work day was taken off for nothing (we got the run around until they finally said they weren’t coming around 4 pm), they then showed up one unplanned morning as we were about to leave for work (again requiring a morning off work), and Robert didn’t show up to “ensure the work was done properly” as he said he would. We called him out to see the damage and he agreed that it was really bad and worse than he thought it would be. We asked him to take pictures to show the general manager and arranged to have someone come to fix the bottom step and level out the stairs (by putting scraps under it to prop it up). Unfortunately, they didn’t do anything about the squeaky steps nor did they give us any reimbursement for the cost of replacing the floor boards, replastering and repainting the walls, or lost wages. I suppose that’s why they take half the money when people place the order and the other half a few days before delivery…so people can’t have any recourse when they do a terrible job. All in all, it was a disaster of an experience and I would strongly recommend avoiding Alpa Stairs.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Teach their sales agents how to measure accurately. Inform their installers that if stairs don't fit in easily, it should be taken back and resized.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Refuse to go with a company that makes you pay the second installment before the work has been completed to your satisfaction.
