plaster work to smooth out textured walls

Gareth was very quick to provide a quote for the work - he even provided references. The first day he claimed to have forgot his wallet - no cash, therefore no ability to buy supplies. Because he quoted materials separately we took him to Home Depot and paid for the supplies. He asked if we had a ladder; he did not show up with proper tools to do the job. The first day was the only day he showed up on time. The work took about a week and overall was good, however a final sanding was required before painting. We also hired Gareth to paint (and additional $700). When I came home he had put one coat of paint (primer) on without cutting in and used the wall primer on the ceiling even though white ceiling primer was provided - not the end of the world, but frustrating. He was to show up at 10:30 that day but did not show up until almost 3 pm causing my husband to lose more than half a day of work. The biggest problem however was that he did not finish off the plaster work around the split system air conditioner installed in the upper hallway. I'd promised earlier in the day to provide a cheque however after seeing this unfinished area I emailed Gareth and said I would like this finished/corrected before payment was released. His reply email was shocking. It was rude and beligerent; he was defensive of his work and then said it cannot be corrected but he would see what he could do. This unfinished area was never pointed out as a problem when pricing the job or at anytime while the job was ongoing. There were other areas where sanding could have been better/smoother also. We asked him to come by a 8 am the following moring so we could sort out. He never showed up - so finally at 8:30 we decided we did not want this rude and unreliable contractor in our house any longer and emailed him that his tools where on the front porch which he could pick up and a cheque was left also. We were very dissapointed in his response to our request to resolve one area of the plaster work which was left in an unacceptable condition. Overall the work he did was good but the pain of not knowing when he would show up and that he was not willing to correct deficiencies and became defensive of his work and rude to his client was just too much. I will never recommend this contractor to anyone nor would I ever hire him again.
