Flooring

I bought Torlys vinyl plank flooring from Woodchuck and had them install it in my condo, replacing the existing laminate flooring. The space they redid is around 500 sq ft, with 2 closets, a den and a general living room / dining room area.

The head of the crew of subcontractors left after one and a half hours, and didn't return until a half hour before the job was finished. The three people who remained did most of the work. From start to finish, it took them about 6 hours, including the removal of the existing flooring. I didn't understand how they could have finished so early until I saw their work.

They left a screw under a plank, causing it to gape at the edge. They left broken pieces of planking underneath the flooring in two other areas, causing bulging in the flooring. They dropped coloured glue from a transition piece onto the bedroom carpet, staining it. A door frame was broken. Most of the nails used to install the shoe molding protruded. There were significant holes (some 2 inches in length) in the drywall and in a bathroom door, and these were at eye level or above, not below where minor surface damage from the installation process might be expected.

The project manager said prior to installation the concrete floors had been levelled well. Vinyl planks were installed on top of 6 mil poly, as per Torlys' specifications. The completed floor is "crunchy" in multiple areas, sounding like paper is being crushed underneath when the floor is walked upon. I contacted the manufacturer, who said that there shouldn't be any sound coming from the floor. The installer says the floor should settle with time and not remain so noisy.

A month after the installation, the floor has grown quieter. The deficiencies noted above have been rectified, with the damaged bedroom carpet being replaced by Woodchuck. While the initial flooring installation was highly problematic, the post-installation repairs were done well. I thank Clinton and the other staff at Woodchuck for their follow-through and professionalism in ensuring customer satisfaction.

They left a screw under a plank, causing it to gape at the edge. They left broken pieces of planking underneath the flooring in two other areas, causing bulging in the flooring. They dropped coloured glue from a transition piece onto the bedroom carpet, staining it. The repair to the carpet created a 2 ft long, highly visible demarcation ridge line near the entrance way. A door frame was broken. Most of the nails used to install the shoe molding protruded. There were significant holes (some 2 inches in length) in the drywall and in a bathroom door, and these were at eye level or above, not below where minor surface damage from the installation process wouldn't be entirely unexpected.

The project manager said prior to installation the concrete floors had been levelled well. Vinyl planks were installed on top of 6 mil poly, as per Torlys' specifications. The completed floor is "crunchy" in multiple areas, sounding like paper is being crushed underneath when the floor is walked upon. Also, two floor areas near the walls sink with a "thunk" when stepped upon. It's unclear if the proper expansion/contraction space was provided. I contacted the manufacturer who said that if the flooring were correctly installed on top of the poly there shouldn't be any sound. The installer says the floor should settle with time and not remain so noisy.

Granted, repairs were done as able. Kudos to Clinton for salvaging things to the best of his ability. The bedroom carpet remains visibly damaged. But the client should not have to watch all work done constantly like a hawk, to make sure it's done professionally, with minimal damage to the other parts of the home.

The full time staff at Woodchuck Flooring seem highly capable. But their subcontractors are another story. I felt dismissed by the crew, and my property disrespected.
