New house, windows doors

Bought a brand new home in 2007 from a local builder who uses Pollard doors and windows. In 2010 one of the windows developed a crack in the seal. The warranty did not cover the labour. It cost just about as much in labour to simply remove a slider and replace it as it would have cost for the material, and they were working in the area for the builder. Wanted to put a storm screen/sun light door on the front of the house. Pollard did not install a standard size front door. Now in order for me to place a storm door over Pollard's door I have to purchase a custom made door, hundreds of $$. Pollard's warranty not worth much to me so I'm not concerned about that issue with installing a storm door.

Company Response

Our product warranty provides full replacement costs for two years from the date of invoice. After two years, we charge for labour and provide the replacement product at no charge, up to 25 years. The window in question was a horizontal slider 48" x 32". The glass was replaced at a price of $96.00.

The front entry door that was supplied (not installed) by Pollard Windows Inc. was specified by the architect and approved by the builder. The door supplied is a standard slab size of 34".

There is no need to beware. Our standard warranty is posted on our website for all to see and our prices and policies are fair and reasonable.

Replacement doors

If you are considering replacement windows I would recomend Pollard as a company not to consider. They took 11 weeks to deliver, not 6-8 as promised and another 9 weeks to fix one of the defective patio doors. A total of 19 weeks of nothing but frustration. Yesterday I had the moulding they installed around one of the patio doors replaced and found there was no foam on the bottom two feet on both sides between the window frame and the wall, you could see daylight. Their customer service is really bad, they don't seem to care. Never again.

Although the contract was signed in the first week of May, the order was not entered until the last week of May,after the final measurements were taken by our installer. Our Sales Rep will take the initial measurements to allow us to create the quotation. These measurements must then be physically verified by the installer before we can begin to manufacture the windows.

This particular order was for painted product and we did experience an unusually high volume of orders that required painting at the same time. This resulted in a delay that was communicated in writing. We installed this order on July 19th, eight weeks after is was entered.

In terms of servicing our sliding patio door, I agree, the process did take much longer than it should have. The issue was initially thought to be related to the installation, however it did turn out to be a product issue. The door is now operating as intended.

With regards to the installation, our installer applied low expansion spray foam insulation evenly around the perimeter of the door from the outside, applied aluminum capping, caulked all joints and applied a vapour barrier tape to the inside. Further, our window and door installations are warranted for five years from the date of install.

Windows and Door

We shopped around, and really liked Pollard's windows. They did a good job, including an odd shaped privacy glass window. The door arrived with a minor dent, and they came out right away to fix it. The job was completed in a day and a half. We dealt with the Burlington location.

windows and doors

We had a number of errors in our installation and we were not notified prior to the installation about the changes and we were sent incorrect items. We were also not serviced in a timely fashion after the installation was finished.

This order consisted of one large window (38" x 71") with a smaller window on either side, all stacked above a front entry door system. The large piece of glass was ordered from a supplier, who manufactured it with a low-e of a different color. We do take responsibilty.

Several attempts were made to schedule a convenient service date to replace this unit.

new windows through out

I searched for a window company that could replicate the original look of the windows in our 100 year old home. Since Pollard Windows is located locally, they were able to provide a custom arched window which was duplicated perfectly. The new windows are beautiful!

Windows in new home

I purchased a new build home in a development who hyped up their "Energy Star" homes, citing the many upgrades including the Pollard low-e windows. Unfortunately, I have had nothing but problems with these windows. I did report all the problems on the various Tarion warranty forms but the builder did nothing to resolve the problems other than installing additional caulking in the basement windows where they are explosed. Problems are as follows:
1. The sliding windows in particular have extreme problems with ice dams...this is not a little ice from condensation - this is a solide piece of ice at least an ice thick that prevents me from opening the window (not good when you have a gas leak which I did about a month ago!).
2. In addition, one sliding window has mould build up BETWEEN the panes. I have never seen this before but it is really disgusting, and I'm thinking very unhealthy since the sealed window panes are apparently not so sealed (mould is due to moisture so obviously moistures has penetrated the seal).
3. A basement window was installed with a 2" x 1" hole in the plastic moulding around the window. This window is completely covered in ice..my the end of winter last year, the complete length of the window had a sheet of ice one to three inches think. Again, this window is not able to be opened which was an issue with the gas leak when Enbridge wanted to open all the windows. (!) This window, as I'm sure you can imagine, is complete covered in mould.

Oh, the developers solution to the hole in the basement window was to plug up the hole with caulking...apparently it didn't work.

Pollard says to go to my builder, the builder says it's Pollard's problems, and in the end, I'm the only one with the problem. It seems like it's a game.

I have called Pollard again to see if I can get a rep out here. Wish me luck! (No response yet, not looking good).

My advice to others is to really discuss, and get in writing, what are the procedures if you do have an issue with your windows. I think we all get those pieces of papers that save "WARRANTY" and we assume we are covered if something should go wrong.

I have tried to make this objective.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Come and take a look at my windows very very soon..the ice is getting worse, the mould is getting worse. And then fix these problems. Wishful thinking!
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?

Understand that excessive surface condensation on your windows is the first visible sign that the level of humidity in your home is too high. High levels of moisture in the air from a variety of sources, combined with reduced building air exchange, through improved building codes and manufacturing standards, tranlates into higher levels of humidity and potentially more condensation on windows and patio doors. This excessive moisture will freeze in negative temperatures, if not removed.

Pollard Windows manufactures windows and doors that meet or exceed all current manufacturing standards established by the testing standard CAN A440-M90. This testing standard establishes benchmarks for performance related to the penetration of air, water, wind and forced entry. Pollard Windows also manufactures to the Energy Star standard.

If you call in and identify yourself we would be pleased to make arrangements for a service tehnician to investigate the windows in question. If we discover a manufacturing defect, we will honor our warranty.
