Great guys Sam and John. Contractors did great work they were polite and professional. I felt my home was in good hands. They are local witch is important to. I am so pleased with the color selection and quality of tiles. Sam and John has a great eye for color and envisioning what suits the home and space.
We had selected Markham Tile as they had come highly recommended by a neighbour. They had remarked on their attention to detail and professionalism. Plus they were local, what did we have to lose?
This is a long read. I apologize, but you need to live with your kitchen/tile/sink a lot longer than it'll take to read this.
We had a few quotes from suppliers to install a quartz countertop in our new kitchen. John said they'd match the quote and get it done fast.
The install went quickly, as scheduled, but only after the glue had dried did we notice that there were MANY problems.
The 'waterfall' was cut on site and was cut extremely poorly. The bottom edge was jagged and rough. The opposite corner was chipped and the caulking underneath to seal it was sloppy. The seal between the two pieces was tight and smooth BUT the two pieces did NOT line up perfectly so there was a gap beside the wall, not something that could be easily covered with a line of caulking.
This was all discovered AFTER the epoxy had dried (it's hard to see these things during the install)
Eventually, the edges were covered with glue and epoxy enough that we could live with the quartz counter as is, and we adjusted our kitchen design to cover the gap by the wall, but this was a poor job from start to finish.
Only once did the installer apologize for the poor job, say it wasn't done well and they'd used too small a saw to cut the quartz. He assured me they wouldn't use that saw again. Gee, thanks...
But wait - we haven't even got to the sink yet! The sink was installed with chunks of rough wood slapped together with epoxy and immediately started sagging. The hole cut for sink did not match the shape of the sink edge perfectly. Again, things you don't notice in the midst of installation, but become very clear once the glue has dried...
To his credit, John was responsive, but all he did was send a crew (who didn't speak English so it was difficult to communicate the issues) who would use caulking and other glues to cover up the glaring errors. They wanted to leave as quickly as possible. He never once personally visited.
The ugly sink install is something we were blamed for. It was an IKEA dual mount sink. Their installer said it MIGHT sag after 10-20 years because the lip was not as big as regular undermount sinks, but he never flagged it as an issue. He assured us it would be fine.
We had to call them back twice in a few weeks to apply more silicon. We were blamed for this choice, that Ikea's sink was a poor choice and the wood and epoxy mess was necessary. It was our fault and the ugly chunks of rough wood were necessary.
I love getting blamed for choices I made.
We called in IKEA who inspected and said it was poorly installed and they were never certify a product that was not suitable for undermount use.
The IKEA inspector told me off the record that this was a 'sh*t job.'
Eventually had the sink replaced and the quartz counter recut to match a different, slightly larger sink. We thought removing the existing sink would be a big deal, full of razors and saws but the new installer literally pushed the sink out of the counter top. It was going to fall out any minute. The new sink was installed without chunks of wood and I haven't once thought about getting splinters or seeing gaps in drooping silicon.
The kicker? My neighbour, who had recommended them, was having a terrible experience with her second renovation job with them! Said they were sloppy and slapping silicon all over the place to fix their mistakes. Sounds familiar.
So what happened? Why all these great reviews and we had such a poor experience?
Simple. They're outsourcing their work, to a company we had rejected. We were not made aware of this 'collaboration' between these companies until after the fact.
On their last visit to repair the caulking he identified himself from "Imperial Granite", not Markham Tile, and only then did we find out the whole thing had been outsourced to save them some money.
I actually called him on it, told him I was expecting "Markham Tile" and he said "Yes" and wouldn't repeat the company he was actually from (too bad for him it was written on their truck outside).
Avoid them. We went with Aras Marble (who saved our kitchen) but there are lots of reputable companies that will not outsource their work to save a few bucks. We COULD have got it done for the same price with the company who SAVED our kitchen. Lesson learned.
Markham Ceramic Tile did an amazing job on our kitchen. We replaced our counter top with a quartz composite and had
a brick like tile for the back splash installed. John was most helpful in the decision making when it came to all phases of the job. He gives wonderful guidance in choosing product and colour to make the Reno absolutely perfect. Whether it was John or Sam in the store, their expertise was top notch! I can highly recommend these brothers for their patience and guidance as well as the professional tradespeople they sent to our home. Heather and Bill Sanham
Love Love Love our new Kitchen!!! We worked with John to select our quartz countertop and glass backsplash. He listened to our vision and used his keen eye to help us choose the perfect colours to coordinate with our existing cupboards and tiles. John provided guidance with the sink selection and we couldn't be happier. The crew showed up on time and we were delighted the kitchen was completed in a day and a half as promised! Thanks again to Markham Ceramic Tile & Marble.
alk about service and a good attitude. We had a potential issue around our tiles and our dishwasher - 2 years after they redid our kitchen. Sam came by to check out the problem and it was a non-issue that could be easily resolved. Thanks John and Sam. This is what service is about and what makes you guys really special!!!
We cannot say enough about the excellent service and workmanship of Markham Tile. We thought we would have to replace all the tiles in our shower because we couldn't get them clean enough. I sent John some pictures and he suggested that they would thoroughly cleaned the tiles and resealed them. They came out looking brand new! No need to replace them now! Thank you for all your help!
We had a great experience working with Markham Tile for our kitchen renovation. We obtained a quote from them for Caesarstone countertops and they came around the middle. We worked with John months ahead of time and he has always been very communicative and welcoming to all our inquiries. The team were able to get us the countertop without much wait and the installers who came to our house were very professional. We’re very satisfied with the service. John also gave us great insights about choosing backsplash tiles, their store may seem small but they have a lot of choices. We will definitely consider working with them again for our future reno projects.
Good Customer Service. Decent job. Pricey.
Great tile selection despite a small space.
No real issues with the work they've done but in hindsight quite expensive as we've done more research on the next job.
Thank you for posting your review. As we tell all our clients we want to be transparent with what we do. I want to address the claim that was made up above. We at Markham tile strive to make all our clients happy. In some instances we go beyond our agreed contract to make our customers happy. As agreed to our contract the quarter round was agreed to be "removal only". As for the dust we understand that it can be an inconvenience and we do our best to minimize the mess but when there is a large area it can be difficult to contain it. We advised the client of the dust situation and the client mentioned that they were spraying the kitchen cabinets and for us not to worry about it. Regarding the vanity as soon as the client made it aware of the mistake we were there within 4 hours to remedy the situation. The last thing regarding the hood vent. We did order the tile as instructed which we still have at our shop, which we ordered without a deposit. Although the "tiny" area between the cabinets and hood fan may seem like a minor job, I informed the client of the cost of the material alone would be as follows:
Tile is $152.76+HST
Glue is $25.00+HST
Grout is $25.00+HST
Labour is $300.00+HST
Total : $502.76+HST = $568.12
As with any construction project it can get messy and costly. We do our best to remain in the budget of the client and as always we try to go above and beyond to make the customer happy. We believe in this situation the customer was happy with the work that we did until they asked us to do additional work outside of our agreement which they didn't agree.
We recently renovated our master bath. After shopping the big box stores we decided on a whim to go into Markham Tile and are glad we did! Not only did we receive great customer service, we also were given excellent design advice. I highly recommend Markham Tile and will definitely return. Thanks to John and Sam our bathroom is a masterpiece!
