Home appliance

I have been in a great number of home hardware stores and what bothers me about them is the lack of consistence. They have a large selection of items but there is little consistency between what is listed online and what is actually in store. I came in to look for a specific waffle iron and out of all the ones listed online there was only one available. This one was $170 and way out of the price range of all other comparable items. The shopkeeper was extremely rude and not helpful. Overall, not greatly impressed.

All materials for deck and fence

When we moved into our house, our backyard had shaky steps leading out to a nearly uninhabitable chain-link fenced square. I went to my Danforth Lumber on the recommendation of a friend and have been very happy with them. The staff is helpful (if not overly outgoing) and patient with my ignorance and requests for advice. They sold me everything I needed to complete my new deck and fence, including the concrete, the wood and the fasteners. I'm sure I'll continue to shop there as long as we live in the neighborhood.

Deck repair project

I read the glowing reviews, but I'm not sure what the hype is about here. The staff are OK. Just OK. They didn't Wow! me with their expert knowledge, and frankly some of their answers were not very accurate or useful.

The lumber I received was really subpar. I bought a bunch of pressure treated 2x4s, and many of them were dry, brittle, and warped. I ended up scrapping about 30% of what I bought because they were unusable. When I came back to complain, the response I got was "Huh. That's weird." Like it was my fault that the decking screws they sold me (specifically for this wood) kept splitting open the boards.

To get your lumber, you can only have 1 vehicle access the backlot at a time, which means there is a continual queue. I was in my car waiting when someone else just drove through, blocking the entire driveway. Instead of making him move the car, the staff simply served him as well, ignoring the line that was patiently waiting.

When I was getting my lumber, it seemed the staff was inconvenienced by my small order. I wanted a 8' length, and the guy gave me a 10'. When I indicated it wouldn't fit in my car, he huffed off to get me the right length. Sorry, but do I need to ask you to do your job?

On the plus side, it is a convenient place to get specialty lumber in the East end, and some of their wood is very nice. On the whole, however, I give this place a 4.

Skylight purchase

I am doing a house renovation and one of the many projects was redoing the roof. I thought this was an opportune time to install a skylight. I waited forever for the construction permits but once they were received we moved so quickly I realised I had not yet found a skylight.
My roofer was coming in on short notice & I had a terrible time finding the skylight size I needed in stock. I checked all of the big-box stores I could find in Toronto but was advised that it would take 2-3 weeks to deliver the goods to the store.
Oh a whim, my mother dropped by Home Hardware/Danforth Lumber because she had had good luck finding items there in the past. Tom, their specialist, took the time to review the options, sizes and costs with her. They did not have the item I wanted in stock but they allowed me to order over the phone and advised that they could have it in within a day. Although the delivery company did not deliver the package in time, I received the skylight within 2 days.
The cost was comparable to other stores but the service was fantastic! What a great experience.

Various construction projects

They are tucked away on Dawes Rd, but what a gem! Danforth Lumber
always has reasonably priced lumber, including exotics such as IPE,
and various other hardwoods. Their lumber is straight, and stays straight, as opposed to the big box stores whose lumber is warped even before it is unloaded. Excellent delivery service, and friendly
people. They also have a great bargains section outside the front of the store.

Flooring

I first found Danforth Lumber in the summer when I was doing a small porch repair which went fairly smoothly. So I kept them in mind this november when I was looking to redo the flooring in my family room and two bedrooms . I will admit that they weren't my first choice due to the fact that their parking facilities are lacking and at first glance they didn't seem too dedicated flooring. When I decided to take a look at their selection however I was greatly suprised, they had an expansive hardwood collection to rival most flooring specialised companies and the staff to support it. Though a friend had recomended I deal with the owner of the company, I ended up dealing with two sale associates Matt and Tom who both demonstrated condsiderable product knowledge and a apreciation for the customer. In the end I was able to buy my flooring at a more than reasonable rate and also was able to arrange a delivery at a prompt date. I would suggest Danforth Lumber to any of my friends and will definatly use them again in the future.

Approximate cost of services:
$8,500.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
Update the store image, though I am a fan of indepant companies such as Danforth, it did feel a little dated which is another reason it wasn't my original first choice.

Lumber Purchase

We were in the market for a substantial amount of lumber but we had a very small budget. When we approached other retailers, none of them matched the amount we got from Danforth Lumber. The owner was an excellent communicator, negotiator and were able to understand our concerns about the wood quality.

Floor project

The sales staff is average to good there but when it comes to dealing with the owner he is an exceptional communicator. He's responsive, he negotiates on budgets but more importantly he's able to work within my strict time constraints. I would surely recommend him to friends and family because he's available to all the consumers needs.

10' x 10' Gazebo

Last summer, we embarked on a building project, a 10' x 10' Gazebo. We planned to build the Gazebo ourselves but decided it would be less frustrating to purchase a Gazebo kit. We were not happy with the quality of some of the pieces of lumber delivered. We called Bill at the store and he said he told the guys on the floor to pick out good quality lumber. He would have them picked up and replaced by the beginning of next week. We wanted to start our project on the weekend so we borrowed my brother's truck and exchanged the pieces that afternoon. The instructions were not written for laypeople but we managed (with some help from my brother). The weather never really cooperated but the buyers of our home liked it. This summer we plan to build another Gazebo at our new home here in Nova Scotia.
