Owner smooth and charming at first, came by and promised to complete work within 4 days with 4 people. Project involved installing brick slips on two exterior walls of bungalow. The walls had already been prepped for the bricks. Owner charged a daily rate instead of quoting a price for the whole job which should have been a red flag. He was also available to start right away, another red flag as many contractors this time of year are very busy. I am embarrassed to say we trusted him and ignored both of these red flags. First two days almost no work was done, when this was questioned, owner advised he was contemplating how to best approach the job. On the third day, the owner did not show up and the 3 people that did show up (after 10am) completed only 5 rows of brick slips on one wall and these were poorly done. It then became sadly clear that this job was being deliberately dragged on to maximize profit and would take much longer to complete at a much higher cost. We signed a mutual release after the third day. Even so, we feel we have overpaid for very little and poor quality work. Lesson learned, do not agree to daily rates and be suspicious when a contractor is available right away during peak season.
