Roof Repair

February/March of 2012 there was a thunderstorm and the roof started leaking into the bedroom. I remember the rain stopped about noon, but the roof continued to leak into the bedroom until 6 am the next morning. And that night there was a fundraiser for renovation of our church. that I attended. I jumped up, told the audience about my roof leak which I didn't believe I could pay to repair but that I was donating $500. Next thing I knew, Ed Standish. one of the owners of Avenue Road Roofing jumped up and astonished me by saying he would repair my roof if 6 other people donated $500 - which 6 other people promptly did!
Ed came over with his camera to take pictures and determine the problem. The next day Avenue Road Roofing's best supervisor and crew came over dressed in uniform coveralls and very efficiently, quickly and quietly repaired the roof. It was the best roof repair I have ever had! The crew were polite, mannerly and cleaned up after themselves. I highly recommend Avenue Road Roofing and their crew for your roofing needs.

Cabbagetown Flat Roof - Re-Slope & Re-Roof

The True Test of Time - Cabbagetown Flat Roof December 18, 2013.
With the recent heavy snowfall so early this December (14th), more snowfalls sure to follow for the next 4 months. This will make some homeowners anxious if their roof will withstand the winter, then the spring thaw.
To rate the expertise and workmanship of a roofing job, the ultimate test would be the function of the roof to protect against external elements with NO LEAKS .
We have lived through several roof leaks. The resultant damages not only affected the interior of the house through several floors but also sapped our energy and sanity.
In the early 1980’s , we hired a contractor to gut and renovate an old Victorian house. We knew when finished, the 3rd floor flat roof sloped the wrong way. Being ignorant , we thought it would be very simple to re-roof in the future as we were anxious to move into the house after one long year of tedious commuting to work during the renovation. Ten years later we did re-roof to correct the slope even though the roof did not leaked.
We chose Avenue Road Roofing to re-roof in 1993.We almost did not hire Avenue Road Roofing as we did not know /understand the torch membrane system proposed. Thanks to Ed Standish, the owner of Avenue Road Roofing for his patience, understanding and explanation , thus gained our confidence. The roof was corrected to slope away from the wall using multi-layers of sloping material to a gradual single layer .Then a double layer of torched membrane went over top.
To date, this roof had past the true test of time. It went through 20 years of winter ( some years of very heavy snowfalls ), 20 years of spring ( of constant freezing & thawing), 20 years of summer heat ( some of extreme temperatures) and 20 years of rain and even the odd hail storm. It even stood up to this year of extremely heavy and prolonged rainfalls. This roof is predicted to have another 3 to 5 more years of life. It even out-lived our deck & air conditioner.
I highly recommend Avenue Road Roofing if you want a quality & “ worry free” roof.

new roof

On Oct. 28, 2013, we had a new roof installed. From the initial quote by Marc who gave us a lot of information on what to be aware of to
Barbara who did all the scheduling and to Louis & his crew who
did the install we have nothing but praise for the proffessionalism
showed by all. Thanks

Bird problem in soffit and roof inspection

My home is 6 years old, very high with a stone facade. Birds have been nesting in the soffit at the front of the house for several seasons, getting in at the roof-line, as well as the small gaps between the stone and soffit. I called several companies who never returned calls, this is a tedious and "small job" relative in terms of cost for a roofer who is interested in taking big jobs.

Jason and Rob from the repairs department came out to do the initial estimate, they made suggestions of how to get the birds out, fix the soffit, and after a roof inspection suggested we replace air vents on our roof as well as the roof needing some caulking. Four weeks later the job was done (they were very busy). Joe completed the work and did a great job. He meticulously fitted small pieces of aluminum like a jigsaw puzzle to close up the bigger gaps where birds could get in, and caulked everything to give it a neat appearance. He replaced our vents on the roof, even taking the time to show me the dryer vent which was collecting huge amount of lint and creating a hazard, as well as making the dryer work way harder than it needed to. It seems the builder/contractor who built my home saved some money by using super cheap vent covers on our roof, and the wrong cover for the dryer vent, where we couldn't readily see them. I am happy to report we have more no birds - and our dryer runs like new again. Thank you very much!

They installed a flat roof for me in 2009

Their sales people are very slow to reply to request of information.
My flat roof is not so flat because now the water is settling on one side of the terrace and that is very ugly.
Their price is quite high.
I just called them recently to enquire about installing a porcelain terrace on the roof. They first tried to convince me to build a wooden deck instead but when I insisted on a tile terrace, they told me that they don't have any subcontractor to do such a think. I did ask about the requirements to build such terrace, they finally advised me that my sales rep will contact me for an appointment. I called the rep who advised me that his office will call me to arrange an appointment!
I don't think clients should be treated that way. I called the office and asked specifically about the membrane's manufacturer in order to know the material I need to use as a base for my tiles. They took my name and number and I was promised to get a call from the warranty department to answer my question.
I must admit that I had no leak after 3 or 4 years of the installation.

Hi Linda. We are happy to hear your flat roofing is performing well with no leaks. Unfortunately as roofing specialists we can't provide every type of construction service and aren't able to help you with the specific type of terrace you're looking for. In order to be helpful we gave our recommendations, but we understand that's not exactly what you had in mind. I'm sorry you feel we weren't being attentive to your requests, if you'd like to call me, you can call me at 416 785 5129. I would be happy to discuss this with you, and help you in anyway I can. Complete roof replacement

My experience with Avenue Road Roofing was a dubious one.

Pros: When they get to the job, they do everything very quickly, and the result is of high quality. Shingles roof team was remarkably efficient.

Cons: Communication within the company is non-existent.
Flat roof team left the scratches on the siding of my neighbour’s house.
Flat roof team proved very uncooperative when it came to doing the dumpen vent.

Here are the details.

I signed the contract on July 26th and was told they will be able to start the work in 3-4 weeks. They started Sept 3rd. I was told their scheduler will get in touch with me. In reality I had to call several times because the scheduler was sick and no one else was able to do the job.

By Sept 3rd, my contact phone number has changed. I gave my cell to my father who came to help me with reno, and did business on my work cell. I left my new number to virtually everyone in the Avenue Road Roofing company whom I spoke to. Nevertheless, when trouble came, they couldn’t reach me because they didn’t have the number.

On Sept 3rd, it was the shingles roof team started their work. They were done in one day and did everything beautifully. I was delighted, hoping that tomorrow the work will be all done.

On Sept 4th, the flat roof team started their work. And here came the trouble.

First, I needed a dumpen vent on my flat roof. The roofers would forget about it, if I haven’t called in to ask them to cut the hole in the bathroom ceiling. They refused. They said they do not do any work from inside the house. Ok, I asked them to wait for my electrician to come and do the hole (the hole was necessary to run the vent duct properly). They refused. They had a whole roof to work on, but they refused to wait for an hour for my electrician on the excuse that they need to finish the vent NOW to continue work. I had to ask my carpenter to make the hole, which cost me additional money. I pay several thousand dollars for the roof and they cannot wait for one hour to provide a service client requests.

Second, when I came home after work, I was met by my neighbour looking very angry. It turned out that the flat roof team damaged the siding of his wall when dropping down the debris. There were multiple scratches on the siding. My neighbour is an elderly man and he’s Greek, so I realize he could have been exaggerating the damage. But taking that he had no complaint whatsoever about shingles roof team (and he would not miss a chance to complain), the flat roof team really did something wrong.

I had to write a complaint and forward it to several different people within the company. As a result, two nice men, Joe and Kaz, came to fix the damage. They pacified my neighbour by patching the scratches, and fixed my dumpen vent, this is to say completely redid it from inside. Why couldn’t it be done like this in the first place is beyond me.

In the end, the work was done, and I’m happy with my new roof, but my experience was far from brilliant.
If I would ever recommend this company to others, the recommendation would come with a warning: “They are good as long as you babysit them”.
