Terrible installation of glass shower

Apex Glass was hired to install a frameless glass shower. There were issues with the caulking immediately (very thick and unsightly), and they brought the wrong hardware for the shower door. They redid part of the caulking that was initially problematic. Within a year the seal had started to break down everywhere. Two years later, the seal is broken all around, there is black mould growing and water gets through. Many of the small glass support pieces have come out through attempts to clean under the caulking. When the company was contacted under warranty, they wanted to charge for redoing the caulking. When you pay for things to be built brand-new, you expect them to last for more than a year!
I’m not sure their method for the frameless shower is the best due to the reliance on caulking to fill a large gap between the glass and the walls. Friends of mine with frameless showers haven’t had issues like this even in a 5-10 year time frame. It’s honestly a nightmare!

Approximate cost of services:
$1,500.00

Company Response

Wow, this is very unusual for us to see. Vary rarely do we get feedback like this for our installations or after-sales service. We are truly sorry to hear that you aren't completely happy with our work. Poor feedback is something we take seriously in order to improve.

Just to help educate anyone that may be reading this:
We use mildew resistant silicone designed for glass to tile application. We must apply enough of it around the glass in order to hold the glass in place. Silicone on a frameless shower is used to structurally support the glass and also to seal from water leakage.

Silicone does not last forever, especially on the bottom or where water is constantly sitting on it. Some last many years before peeling away, others do not. There are many factors that can have an impact on how long silicone will last. Some examples are, cleaners that are used, how much water sits on the glass/silicone bead, how much use the shower gets, hardness of water in home, type of tile used, whether there is slight movement in the tiles/wall, and whether a sealer was used on the bottom sill or not.

In other words- silicone will not last forever and unfortunately we cannot warranty the silicone application forever. Just like a tub or tiles need silicone re-applied every few years, so does a shower.

We install hundreds of frameless showers every year and its not by accident that we are used by the same customers over and over again. We are not happy to hear this feedback and we wish we could rectify this. Feel free to contact us through email or by phone if you'd like to talk about how we can help.
