Interior Designer Or Something Else

My Wife and I are really not sure if we should be talking to an interior designer or doing something else (ie talking to people at Pottery Barn / Home Depot etc). We live in a fairly new home and were hoping to get some advice on colour schemes and furniture layouts to make better use of the space in our house and make it more presentable for a few of the rooms (Master Bed Room, Attched Washroom & maybe Living Room)

You can book a consultation with a Decorator or Designer. She can leave you with ideas or be more involved and help you put it all together. Stores are hit and miss. I have overheard some Really bad advice being given out, without even seeing the Clients home. Colors can change on lighting in the room. If you get a consultation & hire that person make sure It is someone who wants to make Your house – YOUR home. Who listens to your requests. A Decorator can help you put it all together but still make it some place you can be comfortable in.

Rob. If there is a Benjamin Moore dealer near you, I would call there and see who they have on staff to do Colour consultations. A number of our clients have gone this route with great success. I would stay away from the big box stores as you will likely leave only with little beneficial advice and higher blood pressure.

Paint stores are good with colors But not good with furniture layout lighting etc. Colour consultation is “part” of the job. My Paint Reps. actually use me for free advice when I go in. B.M. being one of the Stores I deal with.
Stores have “Decorating or Design Specialists” but their job is of course to sell their products. This comes from Top management.
Color needs to work with several things in the room.
It all depends with exactly how much help you need.
A Decorator / Designer will leave you with colors/ layouts – programs printouts/ pictures/ suggestions etc after a consultation.
